Well, it's quite a simple mechanism, not much different from a real crossbow. She's pulling the lever backwards, and these hooks drags a string on the nut.

proper siege shield, a crossbow, proper helmet and fitting armor, this is too properly medieval, you cannot NOT fav it

Thanks! I tried to draw a prop, but it doesn't look good. So I really decided that the shield is staying using spikes in the ground, like pavise. You can see its mountings on the ends.
