Description One of the more reclusive species housed here at the Monsterland Paleo-Zoological, the Varanopode pater or Varan is one of the rarest forms of kaiju to have been discovered, with actual firsthand encounters considered a rarity in the megazoology community. First discovered in the Tohoku Region of Japan in 1958, the first specimen of V. pater was discovered amidst an investigation into several unexplained occurrences throughout the area, resulting inevitably in the creature briefly attacking Haneda Airport before being taken down by the JSDF. Though other specimens have appeared in the following decades, none have ever resulted in a volatile confrontation like that of the 1958 incident.

Of the more reclusive species to be contained within the Monsterland Paleo-Zoological preserve, V. pater is contained by relatively simple means as despite their triphibian nature, they tend to stay within the higher altitudes of the preserve itself, being the several mountainous regions, residing in the bodies of saltwater in the highlands below the P. kawamuraii  roosts as it appears the climate and overall ecosystem itself acts as a natural barrier for them, likely in it being a preferred climate. Despite this, countermeasures are in place as it has been proven effective that the same radio frequencies used to contain the P. kawamuraii as seen in a 1968 incident in which one of the specimens attempted to glide out of the preserve to no avail.

V. pater is also notable in that it tends to avoid other megafauna, though they can be territorial if cornered as on rare occasions, they can take on a vertical stance to scare off potential threats [as seen in the rendering above], which in most cases could be triggered by a P. kawamuraii  flying past, usually resulting in a brief skirmish. Typically, the V. pater lies low, close to the ground in that it is a carnivorous species, feeding on lesser insect-like kaiju, such as Meganulon kitamatsuensis. In many aspects, they share similar lifestyles

Despite their timid nature, V. pater seem to have a rather fascinating presence within ancient history as it was worshipped as the "Baradagin-Sanjin". A diety apart of a previously unknown pantheon which depicted the reptilian kaiju as an ancient mountain god of sorts, which is rather fitting as allspecimens that have been contained within the preserve have been observed sticking mainly to high mountainous regions, sharing an enclosure with the P. kawamuraii  and M. kitamatsuensis. In addition to this, according to legend, the "Baradagin-Sanjin" is also capable of commanding the freezing mountain winds, able to turn water to frozen ice by a mere breath. While this ability has not been seen within any instance of V. pater documented, it is possible as V. pater is capable of manipulating various gases within it's body, as the process in order for the massive sphenodontid to glide, it can separate the oxygen and hydrogen in water it takes in before then expelling the oxygen and pumps the hydrogen molecules into the various bumps along its body. It may be possible it can utilize a similar process to convert oxygen into nitrogen.

With the overall rarity of the Varanopode pater in todays environment, their preservation is instrumental to the Monsterland Paleo-Zoological Preserve as the species currently is defined as "Critically Endangered" in terms of megafaunal standards. However it may also be possible that not many  specimens of Varanopode pater have re-emerged from hibernation as all cases of Varanopodes emerging are usually from cases of disturbed hibernation, given the species is mainly observed hibernating for long periods of time.

While Titanus Gojira, Titanus Rodan, and Titanus Mosura became international superstars, Varan was the one that got left behind.
