Halley nudged Tattoo’s side, pushing the horse into the arena. She looked around, letting out a breath she didn’t know she was holding in.

Breathe. Just Breathe.

Halley asked the horse to trot, the angry thing begrudgingly obliging. She brought him towards a few of the scarier jumps, before walking. The buzzer sounded and she took a deep breath, then slid her outside leg back and asked him to canter. He flicked his ears back and swished his tail, jumping into a fast canter. She shortened her reins, bringing him in, and laid her eyes on jump one, a wide, square oxer, straight out of the corner. As she set him into the laneway, she pushed her shoulders back and looked up, tightening her leg on the horses side as he took the distance. They flew through the air easily, Tattoo letting out a small grunt upon his front feet reentering the ground.

She regained her posture quickly, setting the horse down on his hind end, him angrily pulling on the reins, eager to increase the pace. Halley sat up further, placed her leg firmly to his side, and directed him towards fence two a and b, a one stride, starting with an large, upright vertical, and ending with another wide, ramped oxer, then 5 strides to the wall.

Halley saw a good distance going in to the combination, but Tattoo opened his stride massively right before the jump, and they came in extremely short.

Shit. I’m going to pay for that.

She kept her leg to his side, sitting up as tall as she could, grabbing mane. Tattoo, ever so talented, kept the rail up, and somehow the team made it out of the combination with all the rails still set. Halley lifted her eyes and held Tattoo up on the approach to the wall, extremely careful not to let the stallion get out of hand. They somehow managed to find a good distance to the wall, Tattoo clearing it easily.

Once all four hooves reached the ground, Halley quickly directed him towards jump four, a wide triple bar. Halley saw an extremely long distance out of the corner, so she gave him his head, squeezed with her heels, and kept herself up, trusting the horse to close the distance appropriately. Tattoo proved her correct, sailing quickly over the triple bar, landing with a grunt. Halley set her eyes on the top rail of the next jump, 6 strides away. Tattoo was already moving quickly, so she made up her mind and

let him do what he does best and run. Hopefully, it looked better than it felt, as she attempted to keep them somewhat collected, taking out a stride in a long-set line. She could almost hear her brother cringe.

I’m probably going to pay for this too.

Tattoo perked his ears up, happy to be given free rein. He somehow made the striding look as natural as it could get, and sailed over the vertical. After landing, Halley collected him quickly, taking a wider bend to jump six a, b, and c, which then bends 8 strides to jump 7, a wide liverpool. Halley keeps her pull on his mouth tight, keeping him compact. They get an easy distance going in, Tattoo taking the triple-combination easily. He lands with a soft grunt, and Halley sets him back for the liverpool. Once she’s in the laneway, she gives him a bit of leeway, and lets him take an open stride. He’s always loved liverpools for that reason specifically.

Halley directs him straight to the rail, setting them up for the last jump, a tall vertical, straight off the fence. She holds him together as best she can, and supports him with leg before the jump, him gliding over it easily.

She smiles wearily, and pets his neck. “Good boy,” Halley says, pulling him down to a bouncy walk. Halley makes eye contact with Leo from where he’s standing at the in-gate, and she can tell they’re thinking the same thing.

But there’s no time to dwell on that grim inevitability, as the buzzer sounds. On to the jump off.
