Jeez, man, that's fantastic. The original pencil vrsion was awesome on its own, but the colors really bring it to life.

By the looks of it, I'd say it could double as a guard dog as well. That or eat your face off as soon as you fall asleep. Either way, I kinda want one.

Awesome sauce dude. I almost wouldn't mind being blind if it meant I could have THAT beastie.
Then again if I was blind, I wouldn't be able to see how cool it was. Maybe I should think this through a little more

Do you live with family or roommate? Maybe blind one of THEM and get them a robot seeing eye dog. Then you can appreciate it all the time WHILE seeing it!

'Seeing Eye Dog' for a steampunk design dealing with sight... That's really clever! Seriously cool idea.
Also, the shading/highlighting looks really great, especially on the gold (bronze?) parts. Did you study any actual metal to do that, or was it all from your head?

Had to study bronze and cast iron and how light effects them to try and get it down.

Haha. My other ideas were a microscope tophat and a spy balloon. We had some interesting ideas come up in the class (and some generic ones) including a telescope clock that can see the past and future, and pocket watch that transforms into a little spy drone.

I gotta admit, those are some cool ideas.
I love exercises like that. The funny thing is, the first idea that jumps to your head is the same one that jumps to everyone else's, so you've got to actually think about it. But when you do, you can come up with something really original and crazy.

Beanjamish In reply to proffate [2008-11-06 03:51:12 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. I think in this case the first idea evertone got was "GOGGLES!". Sadly like half the class did a variation of goggles...
Whatever, makes the rest of us look better.

Haha, that's what these classes are for, man. They separate the men from the boys.
Or if you don't wanna be sexist, the men/women from the boys/girls.
But really. Goggles? XD;;;

Really good... how did you do the textures? Stock images, brushes? I like the roughness of its armored surface.

Beanjamish In reply to AstroCrush [2008-11-06 03:02:19 +0000 UTC]
Art pencils, for the most part. I put as much texture and teal as possible into the "traditional" side of it to make the digital side a little easier. I did touch that up with some textured brushes though, yes.
Here's the original: [link]

Amazing pencilwork. I hardly work with pencils anymore, seems as though I'm always rushing to get my work out there that I no longer go through the finer points of traditional work.
Better get back to doing it soon. Great piece!
Also, the style's a really good improvement for you. Have you tried applying it to your human figures, or sapient bodies in general? It adds both grit, volume and realism to your style, so I say run with it.

Beanjamish In reply to AstroCrush [2008-11-06 03:12:44 +0000 UTC]
I'm certainly going to try and run with this style and improve it, but as you said, "always rushing to get work out there" is a big factor.
Early in this class the instructor has us spend hours working on a wood, a concrete, and a chrome textured cube, using just pencil and eraser. The idea was to teach us the value of texture, but also the value of spending a looong time rendering. While I feel I can now sit down and spend outs on a single piece, I doubt I'd be able to apply it to all my work.
I'll probably slowly start building on my "main" style with this one, but for the most part will reserve something this refined (and time consuming) for single important images.
Anyhoo, thanks for the complements, man
