Description Strokes of a brush, recording a visit to Ryoanji Temple , Kyoto, Japan.

Ryoanji Temple is recognized worldwide as having one of the most sublime zen gardens in the world. Unfortunately, not one of my pictures of the zen garden satisfied me enough to post here.

Something about this just appeals to me... I'm not sure exactly what it is right now, but that doesn't matter. I just like this picture

I absolutely love the focus on this. You know what I've been dying to get a shot of? A very fast but elegant calligrapher at work, taken with a slow shutter speed; I'm very curious as to what the effect would be on the finished product. Maybe I'm just insane, but I enjoy the idea!

Interesting concept. Looks like we both will have to look for a calligrapher and give it a try!

Easier said than done out here! One of my students is an excellent calligrapher, but I don't know if I can convince him to let me photograph him doing it, even if I assure him that I won't put his face in it! I'll just have to ask around.
If you get one, I am definitely excited to see it, even if it turns out to not be a sound concept; it'll put my feelings on the subject to rest at least!

I think you have a better chance, then. The calligrapher at Ryoanji was the first I've seen in the past 18 months of this trip to Japan.

But I'll always be on the lookout!

Really? Wow, in Osaka we would sometimes see people doing calligraphy on the street corners to make money. Though come to think of it, I've never seen that in Fukuouka either...maybe Osaka people really are just the weirdos everyone says they are. Another reason for me to miss it there!

None to be had here in Tokyo. That's why I jumped at the chance to grab shots of this guy.

I don't think he was too pleased, but I tried to keep the flash unobtrusive.
