Description This took a long time for me to finish. I am not very good with digital coloring and I don't do well with backgrounds. I tried a lot of things to get this to look good. I am okay with how it is, but realize it could be better.

description from lineart piece;
These are some old chars I made back in HS when I was a huge Gargoyle fan. CarlaC and I are working on a collab together. I am couple one of my chars with one of hers. She inspired me to doodle up a new pic of this family and explain their story. Enjoy and please go see CarlaC stuff too!

They are modeled after Rocky Mountain big horn sheep in North America. Hence they are a clan from that area.
The clan does not recall their exact origin. They were protectors of mountains and the many ungulates that inhabit them (deer, elk, sheep etc.) Not all the members of this clan looked of big horns, Just this family branch.
The clan was highly respected by Native Americans. They shared minor interaction with each other and peacefully coexisted in the mountain wilderness. White man soon came to the Rocky Mountains. The clan tried to accept these men too, but found them much less friendly. The white men disrespected the land and took what they wanted with little heed to impact. The clan withdrew to more remote lands and lost touch with Indians as they were pushed to reservations. The shaman that remembered the old ways wanted to protect the clan from harm. They used the magic of spirit earth to alter the clan's stone shifting and bond this change to carved totems. The totems are carved from wood and change to stone on the morning after the bonding ritual is done. The gargoyle can then keep flesh form. Each time a young gargoyle hatches a new totem must be made for them. The totems protect but also come with a price. If the totem is crushed the spell is broken and the gargoyle is not protected. The gargoyle turns to stone in daylight and suffers the fate of the totem. A crushed totem results in the gargoyle crumbling at dawn. By the early 1900s much of the lore about mountain gargoyles had been forgotten and many of the totems were misplaced, destroyed or obtained by collectors. Gargoyles never kept their own totems and left them in the shaman’s care. As native ways were lost so were shaman and often the totems were not explained. Only a few shaman know how to perform the bond and make totems. Accurate totem carving is difficult.
The members of this family are named Iisax (brother), Puatah (sister) and Chee (sister's son). *The names come from the combined Crow indian word for "bighorn"*
Iisax and Puatah are protected by a totem and stay flesh. They do not know where their totems are. Chee does not have a totem and turns to stone a dawn. Mountain gargoyles are long lived and often do not breed until they reach half a century. The totem maker for the siblings passed away before Chee was born and they have not find a shaman that knows the art.
Unknown to the siblings the shaman that made their totems was actually the Coyote trickster (before he joined with Peter). Peter has not been taught the art and is not aware he has the power to help. Coyote had taken the totems he could find to Avalon and placed them in the castle under the Avalon clan’s care. When the Avalon castle was attacked by Arch Mage many of the totems were damaged or destroyed.
The siblings and their clan had no knowledge of the Avalon castle. The clan was together the night before the attack occurred. When dawn came all but the siblings turned to stone. (Chee had not yet hatched from his egg). The siblings witnessed their clan turn and crumble or break apart. Putah was hit hard by the tragedy as she saw her mate turn just when they were in embrace. Puatah backed in shock that he turned. Then she saw him crumble. Puatah became very depressed from the incident and has not recovered from the grief. Iisax has a strong man attitude and became hard to the pain choosing to block any grief he felt. After sometime Iisax reminded Puatah that she had to come around and look after her young. They stayed near their mountain home, but Iisax felt it would be best to seek their totems and a totem shaman for Chee. They were not sure where to search and began with visiting native sites that had totems, hoping to find the shaman. After searching for four years the clan found Grandmother on Queen Florence Island (from the Heritage episode). She knows many things but not the bonding spell. She tells them she does not know the ritual to help them but suggest that her cousin Coyote may be able to help. She does not know where he is, but Natsilane has learned from Elisa that Peter now has Coyote’s power. They go Manhattan to find the clan there and Peter. (The siblings go to NY after the Avalon saga.)
After they find Peter, Xanatos and Fox suggest they go to Avalon and try and find someone who can help Peter learn the ritual.
When they get to Avalon they end up learning why their clan was destroyed and that Iisax and Puatah’s totems were not at the castle. Kathrine tells them Oberon and his children are not around to help. Magus is able to find their totems. After Avalon they go to New Olympia hoping to find help there.

I am excited to see what CarlC comes up with and I'd like to make a couple pic of the two.

Let me know what you think of my Gargoyle fan story. Of course I am not the creator of Gargoyles. It was an awesome show and had an influence on my art.

I actually think you did very good with the colouring, especially that double coloured horns, you mixed the colours very well . Aww, I got to love those eyes, they look stunning the colour.

Thanks! I did spend a bit of time on those horns. Used some of the pointers you gave me.
I was bothered by the background. I suck at those. Rocks and trees are hard for me to color.

Colouring background, no matter what it is, are always difficult to me, although I improved colouring trees. At least that! LOL

Well I don't seem to be getting any better at making it look believable. I feel like I ruin my pieces trying to add a background. It just looks so cheesy to me.

Hmmn, I actually think you did nice with the back. I like the texture, you probably lack of shadows effects since rocks have lots of it. But I know what you mean, colouring rocks and such are pretty hard.

Thanks for the support
yes I agree it needed some more shadows. I spent a lot of time on this as is. I am not sure I could have done much to improve it. I wasn't interested in spending more hours fussing over some rock shadows that I wasn't sure how to do anyway. I really need some lessons on how to digital color quicker. I am sure I am missing some fancy short cuts. I don't think it takes others this long.
