Description There is a knarled old apple tree on a hill near my house. It produces sour little apples. I have never tasted any deviation on this theme.

Sedna, from TG
I really loved the pencil art of this piece and included it in TG's recent sketchbook.

This painting was done in 2010, I think. O_o It was created as an experiment, I was trying to figure out how to paint the Underworld before there was light. It failed as an experiment, I threw the painting in a corner and proceeded with the comic anyway. Recently, I found the old scrapped painting. Sedna's design has changed. My color sensibilities have changed. I scanned the piece and applied new color in photoshop.

In the beginning this was intended to be a horrific, dark looking piece. But I think this theme is not really a part of me, and so producing it in my art is not something I can manage, at least not with my own characters. This coloring is more true to Sedna, and to the comic. Browns and blues with light being pulled out of darkness.

This piece is kind of nice now. Maybe I will make a print or two of it for Otakon. Fun surprise, finding a decent piece of old art at the bottom of a stack of HORRIBLE old art.

The color scheme is a little unexpected, but it has a charm to it! Oh man, I don't like Sedna but he's so pretty :I

It's always a pleasant surprise to find good things in terrible old art piles! But even if the old art is terrible, you might be able to mine some good ideas from it.

I just stumbled upon this, haven't red the comic, lovely picture, very atmospheric, you really get the impression this is a freeze frame of a much bigger picture/story. very nice!

This is beautiful, and definitely speaks more to the comic, but I do appreciate the original for what you were trying.

haha, I appreciate the original as a step in the process to eventually producing other, better work. If I tried this idea now, it'd be so much better. >< But I'd rather go paint other stuff now. %D

Well, good luck in your painting! I'm excited to see what happens. OuO

This is really pretty. In a way that would look really good on a motorcycle.

O_o I can't imagine it on a motorcycle. Bah. Everything I see on motorcycles is that sort of realisticy thing with wolves howling and eagles flying.

Pretty cool!

I have to wonder though. How big is it and how much black paint/ ink did you use?

blix-it In reply to Grumpy-Old-Snake [2012-06-12 21:42:54 +0000 UTC]

It's 9x14 inches and really, the ink use wasn't that bad. XD Besides that, ink isn't horribly expensive ... would have been so much worse if it was paint instead.

Ah, that's cool. I've been finding that it takes a lot of black watercolor to get anything really dark, asd I've been wondering about all these black filled underworld paintings in your comic. It's good that it's not too expensive, then.

Oh, yeah, maybe you should try out waterproof ink in your works! That's the fastest, easiest way to get true black.

Just make sure the bottle says waterproof on it. =___=;;; I've bought some ink before that I thought was waterproof .... and then it wasn't. And it bled everywhere even after it dried. SO MUCH FOR THAT ILLUSTRATION ~~~~
