The shawl and halo remind me of those Christian paintings way back when. The way she holds her head has a sort of grace to it. I think it's like satire and it's beautiful in its own way

Just out of curiosity, what happened to the pig head afterwards?

I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes, but I don't think that using a pig's head for shock value acknowledges the sanctity of life.

DarkTailss In reply to nakedzen [2010-05-27 07:43:19 +0000 UTC]

No offense, but, what are you talking about? xD I don't see anywhere where the artist was talking about "the sanctity of human life", unless it's in that bit I can't translate, in which case I will politely tip my hat to you and continue on my way!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

nakedzen In reply to DarkTailss [2010-05-27 14:09:00 +0000 UTC]

First of all, thanks for being polite, and if you make it to the end of this comment, congratulations

I never said anything about human life in particular, and I never said that the artist had intended to convey one thing or another. However, on a public forum like deviantART, people will undoubtedly raise questions that may not have anything to do with the artist's own views on the subject. One such question relates to the ethics involved in producing such a work for public consumption. I'm sure that he was trying to stimulate conversation, so I have to thank him for the opportunity to talk about this issue.

In my original comment, I was talking about the sacredness of life in general, including animals and plants. To be clear, I'm not religious in any sense.

I was merely echoing other people who have said that in these times, using a dead animal for its shock value or aesthetic qualities—particularly an animal that has suffered purely for our purposes—could be considered distasteful. Part of the reason why cows are revered in India is that they are seen to have chosen to give their lives to sustain us, out of compassion. Whether you believe that metaphysical crap or not, the fact remains that we owe a debt to such animals, and should try to acknowledge their suffering in some way. When I eat a hamburger, for example, I try to be thankful for the cow that lost its life—and the pig, if it has bacon on it, and the milk for the cheese. It doesn't stop me from eating the hamburger, but it is a useful exercise to help us act with compassion toward the variety of other life-forms sharing the planet with us.

I'm not trying to launch a personal attack on the artist; I just hope that the pig's remains were treated respectfully after the photos were taken. It's hard to tell on the internet, so forgive me if I appear skeptical. Certainly, the nature of his comments regarding the authenticity of the pig's head and blood would seem to indicate that he doesn't think it's a big deal. I would never hold that against him, but I'm choosing to contribute my thoughts in order to encourage people to think about it more.

I'm not perfect, but I do what I can and I try my best. My intent here was to object to the mindset which is based on the notion that we are entitled to use the environment however we see fit simply because we are "special" in some way. We all came from the same place (wherever that is), and we all inhabit the same space. This holds true regardless of one's religious belief or non-belief. Depending on who you ask, we may have duties that separate us from animals, but we shouldn't forget what we have in common, as well.

I hope I've done an okay job explaining myself here. I'm not necessarily trying to change what people do, but how they do it.

...well, why didnt you just say that from the beginning! xD

I can't fully appreciate your sentiments since I think humans are scum and wilder animals are only slightly less offensive to my senses, but thanks for clarifying! I can appreciate that, at least.

I don't think nakedzen was referring to the artist in any way. But life and even more death is nothing that should be treated this lightly. I think that's what they were trying to say. And this is a real pig's head.

I think life and death are overrated. And pigs are delicious!

XrisGM [2010-05-27 05:04:53 +0000 UTC]

obviously the head is not being used as a toy but as a prop for their work. this is an incredible photo! if it offends you don't looks at it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nakedzen In reply to XrisGM [2010-05-28 01:18:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you that people who aren't willing to participate in genuine discussion shouldn't comment on a photo like this saying that they don't like it, and harass people for no reason.

However, I don't think that there is any functional difference between a toy and a prop—they are both used for our enjoyment in presenting alternate visions of reality, so I don't think one interpretation of the use of the pig's head is more valid than the other, in this case

In a way, the artist is showing courage by not being afraid to express himself fully through his photography. Do I believe that it is morally right to use dead animals in such a way? No - if someone did that to a human, it would be considered a serious and indecent crime. However, it is not up to me to decide what someone else should do, and I respect the artist's ability to make decisions regarding his actions.

I can only offer my perspective on the issue presented by the work, being that, intellectual ability aside, animals aren't so different from us. Despite our visible differences, we share common biological features, we breathe the same air, and we both have the capacity to feel pain.

While there is some debate as to whether animals can experience happiness, even a hard skeptic can't deny that they all avoid pain. They just want to live, the same way we want to live; the least we can do when we take the life of an animal is to treat it with dignity. I don't believe that the artist has provided that here, even though the image might be thought-provoking or compelling to some.
