"Those old spider droids were an infantryman's nightmare. Some of the toughest fights my squad and I had was with these droids. If there's one thing about the war I don't miss, it's the dwarves." - RC-1207 "Sev" regarding the DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid

Initially deployed by the Commerce Guild as a means of enforcing their rules on their "clients," the DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid quickly became a mainstay of the Separatist Alliance during the Clone Wars, being present at the Battle of Geonosis and serving throughout the conflict. When the Separatists were defeated, the Empire acquired the bulk of the Dwarf Spider Droids and would deploy them in supplement to their Stormtroopers for the first few years of the Empire until enough volunteer Stormtroopers could be trained and deployed. Once sufficient Stormtroopers had been trained, the Empire gradually retired the Dwarf Spider Droids, scrapping them for resources. Some private entities such as local law enforcement groups would acquire a few DSD1s for their own use and it wasn't uncommon to see DSD1s used to guard various outposts and bases, but by the end of the Galactic Civil War, most DSD1s were in museums. In 29 ABY though it was discovered that the Crime Lord Tyber Zann had resumed manufacture of these terrible droids for his own private armies, wishing to use them to his own purposes.

The DSD1s often worked in tandem with their larger OG-9 Homing Spider Droid cousins, the two models working as an impressive and deadly duo with the DSD1s taking on infantry while the OG-9s focused on armor. The DSD1s would act as spotters for the OG-9s' homing lasers, helping to focus their weapons on enemy armor. The DSD1s could also operate effectively apart from the OG-9s, working alongside of the Trade Federation's B1 and B2 Battle Droids. When working with the Empire, the DSD1s were deployed in much of the same way, working to supplement Imperial Stormtroopers in the field. The DSD1s were typically armed with only a single heavy blaster cannon but the droids were deceptively difficult to outflank as their heads could rotate a full three-hundred-sixty degrees in either direction, making course corrections extremely quick. Attempting to circle around the Dwarf Spider Droids would do little good unless the plan was to flank around it from both sides, forcing it to focus on one target, leaving its backside exposed. Jedi usually had little difficulty taking down a DSD1 but most had to refrain from getting close as, the Separatists, knowing that they would be dealing with Jedi, would often equip DSD1s with a deadly self-destruct mechanism. It also wasn't uncommon for some of the more sadistic Separatist Commanders to use DSD1s as guard droids within POW camps, making sure the droids were stationed nearest the most densely populated regions of the camps so that any attempt to destroy them would be met with a deadly self-destruct that would kill untold numbers of POWs.

DSD1s could also be used by some Separatist Commanders quite creatively, such as placing them on the walls of different fortifications or on the ceilings of caverns, enabling them to rain heavy blaster fire on their enemies. One example was during the Battle of Teth where several DSD1s, positioned on the exterior side of the tall mesas, managed to barrage the Republic forces of the 501st as they attempted to scale the wall. Although the Separatist defenses ultimately failed, the DSD1s did manage to destroy an AT-TE by damaging the grapplers built into its foot pads, sending it plummeting to the ground. As the war dragged on, the DSD1 received an optional upgrade. A horseshoe shaped supplementary power unit with two additional heavy blaster cannons could be fitted around the DSD1's head and body, increasing its overall firepower and rate of fire. Some Separatist and Republic Commanders alike referred to these power unit equipped spider droids as Heavy Dwarf Spider Droids and some were manufactured with the power units attached by default.

Another common modification for the DSD1 was to have its legs removed and its body mounted on a pedestal of sorts in a single location, allowing it to act as an automated sentry turret of sorts. The Empire would use a few DSD1s this way. Prior to the LAAT/i's retirement from Imperial service, the Empire briefly considered mounting a couple legless DSD1s in place of the two manually controlled turrets on the sides of the gunships but the idea never came to be. The DSD1 is not to be confused with its more advanced cousin, the A-DSD, or Advanced Dwarf Spider Droid, which was, by all accounts, the far more deadlier of the Dwarf model Spider Droids, armed with a heavy blaster cannon and two fire-linked missile launchers. Fortunately for the Clone army, the A-DSD was quite expensive and only saw use in locations of serious importance to the Separatists.

I’ve always found them to look silly (in a negative kind of way)...
