In the past, and for the longest time, I've tried drawing my comics without storyboards, thinking they're a waste of time. How wrong I was. Without a reference to guide me along, I was forced to stop after drawing in every panel so I could figure out how to draw the next one. And it's not easy - you have to think about character positions, perspective, camera angle, dialogue, etc. I've lost track of how many panels I mucked up because I winged it.

To be fair, you'll still be doing a great deal of thinking even with a storyboard, but the going is many times easier.

And remember, storyboards are not meant to be beautiful. They'll tend to look messy, as these pages of mine show. If you're drawing in shading and details, you're doing something wrong. Leave the pretty stuff for the finished product!

One advantage I cannot overlook is that you're free to make alterations however you see fit. No messy erasing or kicking yourself because you made a mistake. It's like a draft. Make as many changes as you like until you're satisfied. Then, when you are, you're finally ready to draw a comic.
