Description Holy Tutorials lol! I have been on a spree. This is an update of an older tutorial actually. The Lance was my first cosplay prop and boy did it take an abundance of thinking, planning, making and re-making. My hands were blistered for two weeks from all of the carving (I need a dremmel lol), but boy was it worth it.

This is the Lance for Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion. I hope to premier it with a plug suit this August!

Materials: Wooden dowl, craft foam, coat hangers, paper mache, paperclay, paper towels, saran wrap

Steps:
1. Carve spiral pattern down the dowel (a rotary tool will save your butt here, but I did it by hand).

2. Sandwich flatten wire between long strips of craft foam (I make it three stips thick, with two layers of wire, though I should have done three)....use LOTS of glue . You have to make two long strips this way.

3. Curve wire / craft foam around end of dowel into the pattern. This was actually really hard to get the right shape!

4. Cover in paper mache...like 3-4 layers.

5. Mold the shape of the pointy ends using clay. Cover this with saran wrap and then paper mache. Cut out the clay part and repeat for the other side. Stuff the hollow ends with paper or whatever, then stick in on the ends of the spirals.

6. Paper mache some more....Then cover everything in paper clay....then sand sand sand! (I have not shown this step in the pics)

7. Prime (I used Krylon spray primer) and paint (Krylon, again) and done! WOOT!

What type of glue did you use?

Sorry...i made this quite a while ago.Β  I assume I used hot glue, but it may have been super glue. Good luck!

This looks great, and I'm hoping to make one for a Kaworu cosplay that I'm planning. My only question is about step 2. What exactly do you mean by "two layers of wire"? Did you mean actually layering the foam and wire, or using two pieces of wire next to each other, sandwiched in the foam? Also, where does the dowel stop/how long is it? Thanks so much!

So I have some photos on my twitter. Β Basically I would cut two strips of craft foam and two strips of wire and place the two strips of wire in between the craft foam about 1.5 inches apart. Β This allowed it to be flexible and maintain its shape. Β Also on my flickr is a picture of me holding the final lance to get an idea of the size. Β I didn't shorted the dowel at all, it was almost shoulder height and I attached the wire/craft foam parts at the end. Good luck!:Β www.flickr.com/photos/12620751… Β Β

i've seen some very light foamy paper clay, was about 10$ fror the size of 2 card decks, is that the right kind, i saw an other kind of paper clay that looked heavy and on a tutorial the girl used water to smooth it out before drying, how much did you end up spending on clay?

It's been awhile since I made this lance, but I wouldn't have used more than 2 packages. Β I think I used just a little more than one. Β I was also the heavier style of paper clay, and I did wet my fingers frequently in order to smooth it on. Β After drying I sanded, and sanded and sanded, then would fill in any cracks here and there with more paper clay, and sand again lol

Thanks! Β I was really really happy how it turned out. Β Last weekend though, my roomate knocked it over and it smashed some chunks out of it. Nooooooooo! Β  So this method, although effective, is not smash-proof.
