Bendungan Hilir, JakartaThis is for those of you who complain about going to school.
You get on a bus. You get in your car. Or you walk.
All the way there you complain. You shouldn't.
Many people can't afford school.
This child was the only one around who seemed to be going to school (the uniforms give it away).
Yeah he looked pretty pissed coming home from school.
But if you lived by the train tracks with no running water and no electricity, maybe you'd be a little pissed coming home too.

I lately saw a program on french TV about those people living alongside the tracks and the dancehall/brothels where you could get drunk to death (choose your death, bad alcohol made of cooling-liquid, HIV, stabbed or crushed by a train).
I feel very ashame of beeing french when I see what my government think of indian people, sending this huge pice of toxic waste to be dismantled instead of trying to help these people have a propper life.

i always get a little depressed going to Jakarta. it's like i go from island to island in this big ocean of poverty: mall to mall in an air-conditioned bluebird. i hate looking out the window and having to wave off the beggars.
i've always wanted to go out an take photos in the slums but have never gotten a chance. this one's awesome.
