Excellent. I did something similar for my penal troops, but with less conversion and far less skill.

I ought to add, I also like the way you've mixed 40K Imperial Guard bits with Warhammer Fantasy Militia bits together.

Well sort of a long answer here so bear with me.
The GW flesh tones (including the foundation flesh tone) work well individually, but are virtually incompatible for highlighting. In my opinion the best way to paint flesh is to base coat with any one of the colors. Wash the entire face with an appropriate color wash. Then highlight the cheeks, chin, forehead, nose, and eye ridge with the same (unmodified) base coat color. This alone is usually a good enough effect for a tabletop mini. For a more refined look you could then add either bleached bone, white, or another appropriate lightning color to your base coat color to create graduated highlight shades of the same basic tone. Using these lightened shades add increasingly finer highlights to those same areas.
I have tried elf flesh over dwarf, as well as mixing the two in varied ratios. I was never very happy with the results. Besides by using the flesh colors independently you now have three distinct (caucasian) complexions for your army's skin tones. As you know, space marines may share gene seed information, bu they are all individual people. No sense in painting them like clones
Hope this was a help, happy painting.

Man, can you paint! These guys are gonna look awesome alongside the Valkyrie, no question there.
So, are you painting the whole army to this standard? If so, when It's complete it's gonna be one hell of a sight.

These are really amazing yet simple conversion ideas. I was thinking that the whole prison orange motif made them look like jailbirds before doing the sensible thing and reading the title or description. It was either that or a group of X-Wing Fighter Pilots on a rampage. Great job. Love the details like the tattoos and scars. Did you freehand the tatts or use decals?

Nah, simple is often the best and the results are really, really good. I like these a lot. I have been wanting to start an Imperial Guard army since I was gifted a Leman Russ Battle Tank for my Birthday in 2007. I wanted to do a ragtag looking crew of soldier though for the entire army because I was going to base them on the long forgotten Necromundian 8th 'The Spiders' who were formed from low level Hive Gangers but earned much prestige for there bravery and stalwartness in battle. They were a staple in the original RT era tomes as part of the fluff and were mentioned amongst the list of units that fought at the Cadian Gate in the Eye of Terror Campaign. I liked the idea of them and their difference from the standard guy in green Cadian but not totally Rambo-like of the Catchan. I never considered use of Fantasy Bitz to convert with and the look is very unique. I hope you do not mind if I draw on this as inspiration (not to worry you may keep the orange coveralls).
Sorry for putting the Star Wars imagery in your head. I honestly see convicts when I look at them. What do you plan to paint the 'standard' uniforms as grey?

cbomb13 In reply to BazNevermore [2009-07-19 14:00:30 +0000 UTC]
The official colors of the unit are shadow grey and white. All officers, veterans, and non coms will wear this dress. Grunts uniforms will vary, but all will be wearing flack armor. The penal legion are the prisoners who need discipline, and the "new recruits" so they get light (or none) armor and full bright orange. If they survive battle under those circumstances they earn the right to (re)join the regular infantry.

Will it help if I do mine while you do yours?

Doh!... I had to get the Quagmire reaction for that didn't I... I should have realized how wrong that sounded when I typed it.
Skinks are the best. I had thought about doing a second army composed entirely of Skinks although before that I am going to rebuild my Dark Elf Witch Army under the leadership of The Crone Hag Hellebron (7th Ed. Dark Elves brought that back.... I am so happy). I am not sure if the total Skink army is going to be possible with this new Army Book for Lizardmen since I do not have it yet.
So am I joining you for a swim in the spawning pool?
