Thanks for this, and for responding to all these other comments. I've recently began digitally painting and I'm still getting the hang of "coloring". I find it so much easier to begin in greyscale and add color later. Just wanted to show my appreciation and thank you for taking time and answering our questions.

how do you put the colors over the black and white?

I add a layer in Color mode with 3 or 4 basic colors - background, skin, hair. This gives the effect of a tint. Then I add another layer in Normal mode and basically repaint the image using colors, but keeping the values intact.

I like that you decided to omit the other fallen feathers. It gives the picture more a feeling of he's contemplating something. like when you fiddle with something small even though you don't really have any interest in it when you are deep in thought

This is cool. Do you start in grayscale for every project?

very interesting. can I ask why you start drawing from a picture in black and white?

if the values are correct in a painting, you can do just about anything you want with the color and it will look right. Sometimes it's easier to start in black and white, nail down those values, and then move on to color.

I add a new layer on top of the black and white one and set the new layer's mode to Color. I block in a few big areas of flat color, like one for the background, one for the figure, etc. It will look like a tinted image at this point. Then I add another layer on top, set to Normal mode, and start the real color painting - shadows, highlight, details, etc.

Your art is AWESOME
But how did you coloring it with colors after the pic is greyscale?

in photoshop I added a new layer over the greyscale, set it to color, and added one color for skin, one for hair, another for background. Then I put another layer on top and started painting away with all my colors in a normal mode.

It's interesting to see all the steps taken towards the finished project and how different it looks at different stages.

So you start drawing realism by a gray scale painting in most of your drawings? And then you paint over them again with colors or you just make a new colors only multiply layer? I'm just wondering.

If I know exactly what I want to do with the color, I'll start right off with color. If I haven't quite decided on a palette, or if I want to experiment, I'll start in greyscale. Once the greyscale values are set, it's easy to add and alter color. The base colors are added in a color or multiply layer, and then everything's detailed out in normal and overlay layers on top.
realism - ? I don't think there's necessarily a technique to painting realistically... but having the values right definitely helps make an image work...

Oh wow, that's such a good idea... I bet it's easier to get more depth in color that way. I'll have to give that a shot.

wow you did it in grayscale. I've always wondered how people put the colors like that...it probably takes a lot of time....

greyscale -> color takes a little more time, but in some ways it's a little more flexible -
