Description I'm often asked if this image is rendered which I take as a compliment as this was the first mech I ever shaded in photoshop. I didn't know what I was doing so I tried a few of my own techniques and was quite happy with the results. It took a while and I always whish I did more or did it a little different so I may post a revision in future.

Cool shoulderpad glowiness. I love the fine detail on the hands and fingers. It is so pretty. I wish I had some scerrick of artistic talent so I could dream of one day doing something that pales in comparison to this.

Ok, like I think thats the best compliment I've ever recieved. Thank you. The colouring was experimental and I thank you for your coment on the hands. I love detail and sadly it's usually hidden or missed. I usually draw one hand ond the other is hidden behind a shield or a weapon of some sort but these last few designs were done trying to get over what I usually avoid and see if I can ctually do it.

The colours are extremely smooth. I did wonder if it was a 3D render for a moment Excellent shading, especially for your first go in photoshop. I've tried soft shading in photoshop before, and it was nothing like this good. Any tips?

Good work, keep it up

Id probably say patience and experiment. Though there are many layers there were only two real shading techniques I used. I first used the gradient tool to bring subtle shape to each part. After that, it was a series of brush tool layers at various transparencies so that I could play a little. The main key is deciding the colour because light reflects of various surfaces and colours in so many ways. I can go into more detail if you want but I think the key is colour and subtlety : )

Yeah, I use gradients before the actual shadow too. Then I just put cel-shading on. Shadows look okay that way, but it's hard to get highlights right.
