Work off of photo references! I always work off of a photo when I do digital art which is why it's more realistic than my traditional stuff. There's so much great stock on here, check it out. :3 I'm flattered that you like my use of patterns, but I just use the stock ones that come with Illustrator, although I do know how to make them. I take a lot of shortcuts, so the only real skills I can claim is pen tool, knowing what resources/shortcuts to use, and putting them together in a way that is somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

I've been yelled at time, and time again for not referencing, and I think it's finally catching on. o.o I will go look at stock stuff!

I'd really have no idea have no idea how to even apply the patters. B| I just figured out the jitter on the brush in Gimp. XD The pen tool still escapes me.

Pen tool is very tricky especially in Gimp, I used to use Gimp awhile back some of the controls are funky, it's not bad for drawings and whatnot though.

I'm just all over the fact it's freeware. xD Everything else seems to crash me anyhow. Even paint has been wonky.
