Description This should be called 'Shading Test' but that doesn't sound as dramatic. ;D

I'm trying to refine my shading and really make it my own. Any input??

I wanted another pic where the charactermatches the bg, however I think Dae may match the bg too well. XD

Anywaysssss.... I finally drew Dae. 7D I dun think I've drawn my little fursona since I made her ref back in October. XDDD

Pretty happy with this. :3

The bg was a quickie speed-paint. ^^

Gah, I need to open up commisions, my subby is running out. =/ Poo.

Everything is mine

Not my cup of tea, actually. I know there's such a fashion on wolves here and I understand that, but with that big amount of similar animals in the pictures it is hard to knock somebody off ther knees.
I'll start with the colours You chose. If you choose a narrow range of colours, You should be very consequent with shading. Here, there's not too much of it really, and the wolf merges with the grass field. Shading the grass more would give a better effect. Also, the things that are more far away should be darker, so that it would give the art more depth.
The perspective here is done quite well, but in my opinion, drawing the perspective lines when sketching the art would help You a lot and will reduce future mistakes.
As for the wolf, I like a lot its friendly and serene smile, but what I would like to see is more fur on it. Don't fear to add more fur on Your characters- if You add the fur they will look a lot more natural and nicer.
What bothers me most is the issue of composition here. The balance is disturbed. If You divide the art into two by drawing a vertical axis right in the half of the art You will see the part with the wolf's bust is much heavier than the left part. I think adding a lighter colour there would fix the issue, but this is just my humble opinion.
As for the way you drew the clouds- I love the way how they turned out.
I think You should draw a bigger variety of animals and try to draw animals more like they look in nature, and then start playing with their look to draw them in other styles. Good luck with improving Your art skills!

Thank you very much for the thoughtful critique. It's much appreciated. :3

I do agree that wolves are a widely drawn animal here. However, I was drawing them long before I realized there was such a huge fandom. Beyond Deviantart, I actually do make many non-wolf pieces. The problem is not many of them fit on my dinky scanner. x3

I was worried that the wolf blended in too much with the bg. I think I may play around with the contrast on the lines. As for the grass, I totally rushed it because I wanted to go to sleep. I'm thinking that I'll go back and edit the grass so that it's more complex and accurate.

You're definitely right about it being off-balance. I didn't notice that before. x3

Thank you about the clouds. ^^ They're one of my favorite things to paint digitally.

I definitely want to try to make a paint/draw a larger array of animals digitally. Right now my more varied art is just stuck on huge traditional canvases. x3

Thanks again for the critique, they're really helpful. ^^

Oh, I do understand how showing a huge pic online can be hard I tend to take pictures of mine, but they never have the good quality I would like them to have, so I know how You feel
No problem, I'm glad my words were helpful

ok let me say first off that this looks amazing! Well I really do like the greyscale effect on this piece but I think the highlighting looks a little too yellow if you are going for a complete greyscale look. also i think that the grass in the foreground looks a little too long and thin, sort of like fur or hair. I thoroughly enjoy the shading on Dae but the spots on here back look a little too much like a weird highlighting attempt. I also really like the road keep up on that its really good. So to make my point i really like this piece but i feel like the grey scale look could be improved on. I would try(if you're using photoshop) try using Hue and Saturation to make it greyscale and add the parts you want coloured over the effect layer. Great job Dae!

Thanks for the critique!

I actually wasn't going for a greyscale effect. I wanted the pic to be mainly grey, buts with hints of the complementary color combination yellow and purple. :3

I agree that the spots look odd. I did the shading with the spots hidden, and when I put them back on that area looked too busy.

Thanks agin for the feedback! :3

I think it's amazing! I love the wolf's fur especially how it seems to sparkle. I wish I was good at shading That's something I get a little lazy on XD
