Lately I've been very much inspired by *zowolf 's art. I love the mix of realism and cell-shading that she does, and I wanted to try something like it out. :3So, yup.... Here's my attempt at semi-realism! XD
It's Dae, walking along a cliff (no, she won't fall of XDD) I wanted to model the cliffs and oceans after the ones that I live near. :3
My original intention was to draw this entirely free of refs, that didn't work out. XD However, it was done mostly on my own. I just needed the refs for little details. :3 Eventually I want to get to the point where I don't need refs.
Sooo.... Yeah..... This was pretty fun and I'm actually quite pleased with how Dae came out. :3 I really had to rush the background because I'm leaving on vacation later today. ^^ I feel the bg is a little empty, but I still like it. x3
Watch out Dae! There's little glowing things in the fog!! XDD Those seem to be in all of my pictures. I like stuff that glows. XD

Um, yahhhhh... I'm looking for critiques on this one. I'm new to this style. XD Usually I just go with either cartoon or realism, not a blend. x3

The good points in this work are quite noticeable, the first thing I always notice in pretty much any piece of artwork is the shading, it just brings out the life in a picture, and I think is the core part of drawing altogether. Dae utilizes this with extreme skill and precision, and is my favorite part about pretty much every one of her drawings. The highlights are amazing, and are done fairly accurately, and I think you made the right choice on not adding strong highlights to the face, that would be a bit overkill in my opinion, in other words you used just the right amount!
On shading, the only thing i can REALLY recommend is more depth in the shadows, instead of sticking to one solid color for the darks, maybe adding another darker shade would add a bit more to the "feel" of the artwork. It still looks great if that's what you were going for, it's just a suggestion.
Onto anatomy, I'm not a huge anatomy expert, I mostly draw without refs (lazyness), so mine is never really right, so I'll do the best i can e.deviantart.net/emoticons/r/r… " width="15" height="15" alt="
Dae's anatomy is always great, and if there are mistakes, they're usually not very noticeable. There are minimal things I can really point out, one is that the back right leg (to me) looks a bit off. In the end, 10 points to Griffindor for this amazing artwork! Keep pushing yourself to try different styles and different techniques! Trying new things is one way of showing others (and mostly yourself in my opinion) you are a real, talented, and flexible artist. You're definitely right about the shading. I wanted to try simple cel shading, and I'm never using it again. Not my style. xD The one-shade cell shading just doesn't really work with this picture.
Thanks for noticing the funky leg, I didn't see that at all. The leg would whip around strangely when she walked. xDD

For the shadow, I made a selection around the lineart, filled the selection on a different layer, flipped it upside-down, and skewed it so it would look like a shadow. :3

The background looks amazing from my point of view, I think that when it's the simpliest it is more realistic and non engaging
