Description 11 x 14" Prismacolor Colored Pencils

Edit Feb 9.08
I got tired of the white background and colored it in. That's irreversible, I hope you don't hate it. Heh

Edit Jan 28.08
I tried to scan it again because the scan brings out more detail in the face. Scanning kills the veil though, so it's a lose-lose situation. I don't think I'll play aroun with this anymore.

Quickly, before I have for leave for work...
This is from a stock photo ([link] ) from ~lugubrum-stock 's gallery. Loved the picture (this is one gorgeous lady, and she's has some great stock) and it gave me ideas for a little series, but that's neither here nor there.
The colors in the reference made me happy, so I decided to try it out. Background's empty because I plan on painting this, and I didn't have enough room here for what I had in mind. I'm sorry that I can't draw gold chains, and that her hand kicked my butt, this was a learning experience I noticed that I clearly need to work on her hair I'll replace this image with a new one later.
Can't think of anything else too pressing at the moment, so have a great day folks!

Every time i look at the pencil work I am amazed, even more so at the coloured pencils. I have tried them before and failed miserably. Your work has beautifull light to it as well you have captured the emotion well. I like how you have changed the mood slightly from the original stock photo, giving it more mystery and magic to it.

I like how you use the pencil strokes to emphasize the volume, using the direction of the strokes to draw the volume itself, that way you enhance it. You have mastered the tonal values well, the warmth and depth of the tones really comes through well.

There are several ways one can bring a portrait to life, 1 doing a lot of small detail to be able to capture the person for what they are and another using colours and strokes to enhance their personality. I think you did well with both.

One part that bothers my eye is the shadow work on the hand itself under the beads. I wish you had been more consistant in transfering the shape of the bead and wraping it around the hand surface so that the shadow would be a bit more than just indication of where the shadow should be. Hands are very hard to work on, to me they speak frequently much more about the person than the face itself does.

You have captured the beads well, their playfullness with the light, as well as their volume.

A good advice I was given about human skin while back that is human skin is highly reflective of its surrounding colours. I wish you had used more of that cool green in the shadows of the skin. I think it would had brought the figure out more.

Anyhow it is a job well done. Keep it up!

Thank you very much for your honest and thorough critique, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that
I'm really glad you see the mystery in it, I wasn't sure whether I'd got that across or not, so it's good to hear it worked out.
And I absolutely agree with you about the hand and shadows, I feel like the whole hand itself is too smooth and simple, almost cartoony, compared to the beads or her eyes. I had a really tough time with the colors and especially with the shadows, and really wish I would have been able to figure those out. Color mixing is still a bit touch-and-go for me, it's mostly experimentation, and if it works then great. I really should have tried to keep track of what colors I used and what order I layered them in, that would have probably helped.
And you know, I didn't even think of that reflected color bit, I might have to go back and try to add in some green highlights.
Thank you again, I really do appreciate the honest feedback!

You managed very well to get a very life-like expression in the eyes - they look so real. I envy your talent !

Oh, and the veil looks great, too - getting the transparency of fabrics right is difficult and you did a really good job on it

Thank you very much for your lovely comment! I'm glad you like the drawing, the eyes were my favourite part to draw
And oh man, the veil gave me nightmares, and I'm sure it could have been done better but you know what they say about hindsight
Thank you again for the awesome comment

You're most welcome - I just love skilled pencil drawings

And it's always the artist who is most critical about his/her artwork. i am struggling with that, too. But your veil is really wonderfully done !

I really liked drawing the eyes, they were the best. Though gotta say, I'm biased because eyes are usually my favourite part
The hand kicked my ass three ways to Mexico, so I'm glad you like it. Damn drawing hands anyway

You could be right. I know that the nose is too short, or that I maybe drew the hand too far away from it, so that would probably account for any longness
