The 18-year-old Cygnus Saint came into the Kido family’s care when his dying mother brought him their gates while he was still an infant. While the details of how his mother came to the Kido’s mansion are still unclear, from his own research Hyoga learned that his mother was once one of the family’s top scientists in their technology department, particularly when it came to military technology. Growing up alongside Seiya and Saori, Hyoga did not develop the close bond with Saori that Seiya had but nevertheless valued his new family, and accepted his transfer to Sanctuary’s training facility in the Arctic Circle under the pretense that after completing his training, the Kido family would give full disclosure to Hyoga’s familial ties and the truth about his mother’s involvement in their business. Sanctuary’s facility in the Arctic Circle was noteworthy in that the staff there were not technically Saints, but the remnants of Asgardian warriors who swore fealty to Athena after their dying chief god Odin commanded them to serve her due a life debt where actions in the past where Athena saved Asgard from total destruction. While training with the Asgardians, he grew close to the facility’s medic Freya, but she was tragically killed when the Pope called Sanctuary to arms. During the call to arms, on the night Hyoga’s ceremony crowning him the new Cygnus Saint was to take place, Freya revealed to Hyoga that she was a spy of Zamir Industries’ Mutsuki Zeto (the exiled Aries Gold Saint) in order to confirm suspicions of treachery against Athena. When she told Hyoga that her concerns were founded, the facility’s headmaster and Hyoga’s teacher, the Gold Saint Aquarius Camus, froze and shattered Freya as Hyoga reluctantly escaped the facility and returned to Japan. As the Cygnus Saint, Hyoga exhibits an eerie coolness even in the most heated situations, shedding no tears for Freya and only swearing to Camus that her death would be brutally avenged when the time was right. Despite his dismissive exterior, he values his relationship with his fellow “renegades” and is willing to put his life on the line knowing they would do the same for him. It was also Cygnus who suggested that those loyal to the entity Athena over the establishment Sanctuary join together until the singular callsign “Zodiac Knights.”
