Description The finished mural took me about 60 hours from start to finish, including the clean-up and such. It is 11' tall and about 16.5' wide (330 cm x 495 cm).

It was an experience, to say the least.

Enjoy!

Only 60 hours?! Wow... I really like that we get to see your hand at color though.

...And only 60 hours? O_O

faile35 In reply to claraious [2007-04-13 22:27:14 +0000 UTC]

Yep, only 60 hours, and that includes the time it took me to take off those baffles, caulk the bracket holes, clean off all the dust and chips from the bricks, and block/sketch in all the figures, and do the clean-up, and put on the clear-coat. There was probably about 40 hours of actual painting time. Thank you!

Very impressive. To work on such a huge scale, did you make a grid to get your figures in proportion? What type of paints do you use for murals may I ask? Thank you

faile35 In reply to milbisous [2007-04-12 02:23:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the praise! I used some high quality latex-based exterior house paint, and it was pretty expensive--I was fairly rushed so I had to avoid the time to mix paint, which meant I bought lots of different colors. I put a layer of latex-based clear-coat over the top, too.

I didn't make a grid--I simply used the cinder-block pattern that was already there. If the bricks hadn't been there, I would have used a grid, or perhaps an overhead projector if it wouldn't have to be suspended over the diving boards and swimming pool water below...

Well, you're welcome. And thank you for the flattery, although I hope you are not implying that you are lacking as a "real artist," because your stuff is quite impressive. In watercolors, you leave me in the dust [link] , and your use of brilliant colors is inspiring ( [link] , and [link] are good examples ).

I was not flattering you at all. I have always admired your skills in art. As for me, I've only had a few art classes at the local community college and open university. Not enough training, that's why sometimes I lack words of praise for your awesome and masterfully done drawings! What I've been doing is mostly intuition, so I do feel I "lack as a real artist". You made me with your kind words. Thank you very much for such encouragement, such comment coming from you motivates me a lot. Thanks

The result is fantastic, Jeff. It's not anything I would paint myself (nor would you I think, based on what I've seen from you so far), but it does look very great. The depth in the painting is really nice. As if the two swimmers in the front are about to jump out of the wall. The form of the painting is also nice, between those stone blocks. Alas, this mural is way better than the murals I've seen before in swimming pools. It brings more life in the swimming pool aswell.

Thank you! Yes, getting the idea for this one required about four years of percolating. If it had more bondage of one kind or another it probably would have shown up in four days from the time he asked me to think about it... What can I say? The form itself seemed appropriate to push the fringes and engage the viewer's eye, like the mural is really coming out of the wall instead of being placed on it. Thanks for the compliments--I'm quite pleased with your impression of it.

Wow! Dude, thats pretty amazing! Quite an honour to leave your mark on the community, even if its a slight depature from your usual...ah....storyline? XD

Incredible stuff, hope the smell of chlorine didnt drive you insane(ier) while you did it

Thank you! I hope that no matter what ELSE I draw and paint the community will value and respect it. Now I'll get back to "my usual" as you put it.

And swimming is my preferred way to exercise, so the chlorine doesn't bother me so much.

Thanks! As usual, the expression of the girl was THE LAST thing I worked on, trying to get it just right. I was even worried that it wasn't dry when I threw the layer of clear-coat up, but it was fine. I'm glad you approve of it.

Very nice. Looks like everything came together well. I like how you used the texture of the blocks for shading, and how that makes all the blocks visible. Gives it a unique look.

faile35 In reply to Jeff1966 [2007-04-11 00:50:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. It was a learning process for most of the way. Needless to say, cinder-block does not make a premium painting surface, although it does give some good texture when you want it.

Wow... I hope you feel proud Jeff. It turned out beautiful, and what would have taken me a month, took you only a few days! Great job. The water looks realistic, and I love the way it seems as though the swimmers are coming toward the viewer. It is so interesting that we can see both underwater, and above the water. What a great design. I like your signature too. Just awesome.

faile35 In reply to Dyun [2007-04-11 00:55:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Jana! This one would have taken me longer, save for two things: (1) that ultra-convenient lift had to be returned today, and (2) I have a head absolutely FULL of "Demon's Due" images that are screaming bloody murder to get out on the paper... Finishing it this quickly was totally a necessity, rather than a matter of patient discipline on my part. Still, I'll take the compliment. In fact, I'll take all of them. Thanks!

Dyun In reply to faile35 [2007-04-11 01:01:49 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. Heheheeee.... it would have been funny to see some of those "Demon's Due" images explode all over this mural. I can just see the horrified principal standing behind you. "Jeff! What the HELL is this??!!!!!" Can't wait to see them.

Honestly, such a scenario crossed my mind on numerous occasions, and it always brings a laugh. Don't know if you saw Van's image for the "real" mural [link] , but it gives an idea for how things COULD look...
