Description I said I had another mural to do, and it's finally nearing completion. I've spent about 80 hours at this point, and I'm getting really excited to be done.

16' x 9' (about 5 m x 3 m), done in Acrylic with sponge brushes on rough exterior brick.

A couple of things about this.
1. I walked around the elementary school in question, taking candid snapshots of the students involved in their various activities, and then composed the overall image from those photos.
2. When I say the exterior brick is rough, I mean "rough." Even with multiple (6+) thick coats of primer, I'm working over divots that are between a quarter-inch and half-inch deep in many places. Getting any kind of small detail on such a surface is beyond the scope of this project, but I'm managing to get good, clear definition on faces that are as large as my hand. At the end of the school year, many students who passed by while I was working were able to recognize themselves.
3. Given that these aren't my children, I won't be posting any detailed closeups of the finished work without parental permission, and considering the number of children on the thing, I won't be seeking that parental permission, either...
4. Now that I look at it, I can see that I have about 10-12 hours of work left. The dark-skinned girl in the orange shirt in the lower-right is pretty much finished, but it'll take me a few more passes over most of the other figures to get them to that point.

Enjoy!

WOW, amazing mural so far, Jeff...
I was just feeling like "Hey, Where's Faile" again so I thought I'd stop by, and LOOK, I totally missed this! Sorry.

No problem. I actually finished it a week ago, complete with all the layers of protective lacquer, stripping off the masking, cleaning up and all that jazz. I've got a new image to put up, but I'm just waiting until I get the okay from the school to do so--don't want to be putting images of little kiddies if the parents don't want me to.

Faile's lurking around the shadows, recovering from a fairly huge Summer of work and fun and sending a son to college. How're you doing? Seems like I've got a couple of new Doc deviations in my watch somewhere, or maybe I commented on those already. Hmmm. It's started to get all fuzzy...

I'm behind on art, but almost into a house, so that's good; new studio for Doc. I'm working on a couple commissions n such (and have a few things in cache that I don't think you've seen, one of which I should post the uncensored version of on Pulptoons (Have I missed anything there?)) and am now doing a new personal inked dragon/girl piece... always back to basics.
Can't wait to see the finished mural.. you should post some more censored PT stuff.

this really is nice, bro! seeing colors that are very far from what you submit mosta the time.

I concur with the suggestion of air-brush. It makes pitted surfaces into dream-canvases.

This looks excellent so far. And, as a care-taker of small children, I agree with the decision to keep the finished piece off the web, unless you magically get the signatures of all of the parents. It's just good web-safety.

I'm with you. Thanks.

However I must say that airbrushes and I just don't get along. The small amount of exposure I had with one proved to me that it would be a better investment of my time to try and get good at basketball...

...and I'm genetophysiolobiologiamathematically blocked from getting good at basketball.

Although, I must admit that I'm starting to get the hang of digital airbrushing. Just a bit, and ever-so-slowly the comfort and approval of it is increasing. So, maybe I'm wrong.

Wow, this is going to be spectacular when it's done! I've been approached by some people to do a mural on the side of a building in my town, but I'm a bit intimidated by the prospect. I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished though!

This is wonderful! Having done mural work in high school on our school walls, I sympathize with the whole texture thing...huge pain...but I think you're dealing with it great...this looks fabulous...I'm sure it will be stunning when it's done.

this is definatly one of your better works.
I've done one small murial before so I know what you're saying about Rough brick.

Umm have you considered air-brushing?

Great work still

Thanks for the compliment, the sympathy, and the great idea! For anyone else, I'd say the airbrush would probably work great, but I've been diagnosed with vaporpropulsicpigmentophobia--the incapacity of overcoming my nincompoopery with an airbrush. It's a real tragedy, but one I've learned to cope with since I did this piece 24 years ago... [link]

This is an incredible piece.

It would be cool to try something on this scale. The biggest I did was a chalk board drawing in school on one wall over two side by side boards. The janitors ereased it over christmas holidays before it could be photographed.

faile35 In reply to theRealJohnnyCanuck [2009-07-18 03:49:51 +0000 UTC]

That sucks, and I'm sorry to hear it. But the dimensions of such a drawing are easily approaching "mural" size. Schools seem to be a real "draw" for such works--this one is my fourth (almost my fifth, but I dodged one), and it's a nice "deviation" from normal life and art, if the reward is right.

Thanks for the compliment!
