Okay, Ladies and Gentlemen, here we introduce a new stock model for your viewing pleasure. And, right up front, if you can be the first to guess this model's DA identity, I will feature a few of your pieces in my journal. However, no cheaters allowed here--if you already knew who it was, "you can't play." Note, the guy in this picture is NOT Luther.

And now about the character. Madame Zirena here has a gift. She can "see" things, specifically connected things. If shown one thing and asked about another, she is able to discern a connection between them, if one exists. Sometimes that connection is strong and promotes a vision-like experience, and sometimes it's just an impression. It's a very useful gift, even if the impressions she receives are a bit disjointed and cryptic (as we'll undoubtedly see).

However, like many gifts of a personal nature, this one comes with a liability, in that Madame Zirena's visions seem to involve more and more elements of her own life and livelihood, and this seems to take her destiny out of "Fate's hands" and chisel it into the stone of inescapable reality. She doesn't like that, and so she never lives in any one place for too long, since the longer she remains, the more of her own fate gets interconnected with the visions she sees, as requested by her paying customers.

So, her Modus Operandi is to not rely on her gift for most of the "visions" she grants her customers. She's been enough places and seen enough things that she is able to grant words of wisdom that are vague enough to spare her any liability issues and yet good enough to prove useful to her customers in most cases. Still, most of her customers aren't satisfied with mere "words of wisdom" (as is the case with our turnip farmer here), and require a mystical element, which Zirena provides with a show of smokes, dances, chants, and the like. Only when she HAS to does she make use of her gift, since its use tends to require her to pack up the wagon and leave for a new locale sooner rather than later...

Hence, she's "Vision Impaired," if you get the meaning.

Regardless, the stock model in question has provided me with some great photos for Zirena's part. Without giving away her identity, I'll just say, "Merci beaucoup!" And to the other Deviant who helped me with the costume, I say "Thanks a bunch!"

I hope to post Page15 later today. If not, it'll be early tomorrow morning.

Enjoy!

That is a beautiful costume design... major kudos to the designer/s!
And I just love your title, Vision Impaired... it is sooo perfect for this section of the story so far... amazing!

Thanks on all counts! The title was thought up by a very good and creative friend, and elle-chan helped a great deal with the costume.

Props to who helped you with the costume! Her expression looks like she's receiving some sort of divine information! Luff the window shadow, too!

People keep on mentioning how tall the wagon must be, but my understanding is that it is taking place underneath the part of the wagon's roof which has an addition on it, correct? The designs on the windows were different, so the easiest thing is to just match them up.

I LOVE this pose, and the angle on her face, it's very flashy, and I also like how you left white space around her to give her sort of a glowing mystical look. I can't wait to see in what creative way she gets captured.

Yes, you correctly understand the wagon's interior. Thanks! I, too, can't wait to see in what creative way she gets captured... Note me with any ideas that come to mind, please.

Heh...because she was sticking around outside the Inn and to my mind "safe" from Callista and co. I was getting worried. Judging from your responses to the other fans I guess she'll get to meet them tho'. Thank goodness. Keep up the good work, dude. You're the king.

"The King"?! Well, that's certainly flattering. Thanks! And Zirena's story isn't totally decided yet, so she may not join up with the other three as quickly as one might suspect (or wish for ), although she will probably "see" what is going on under the inn...

Fortune telling ala-Mallrats perhaps? Not too much of a stretch in the contexts of this series I really like the way that you've chosen to shade around her in this picture and her overall appearance (even if it is a bit cliche). I want to know more about this turnip farmer and whether he'll have anything to do with any more of your tale.

faile35 In reply to BadBadBabsyBrown [2007-05-18 02:45:51 +0000 UTC]

By "cliche" I'm hoping you mean "traditionally fortune-teller-ish"... Thanks! Unfortunately, I believe the turnip farmer's role will finish within the next few pages.

Yes, the Turnip Farmer was destined to succeed where Valerin, Avora, and Deirdre have all failed. Unfortunately there was a contract dispute with his agent, and so we canned him after only four pages...

Now, am I the type of guy who would introduce a potential victim like this just so I could turn her into another rope-bound captive within the next 20 pages?...

...Yes, of course I am that type of guy. Glad the title makes more sense. I hope it makes even more sense as the chapter continues--I didn't reveal everything about our little fortune-teller in my comments...

Yggi11 [2007-05-17 20:44:38 +0000 UTC]

I see you touched her up a bit since the sketch, and for the better. I particularly like the darker hair and different jewelry. Overall it's a nicely exotic look, and in-keeping with the popular gypsy stereotype. Together with a (melo)dramatic performance it has just enough flashy mystery to it to impress simple peasant folk.
And what a fun twist on the usual fortune teller stuff: She DOES have real precognition power, but mostly just makes stuff up.
And Zirena (assuming that's even her real name) can see her own unfortunate future, can she?
Gee . . . I woooonder what it holds?

I must have precognition of my own . . .

BTW: What a totally, totally pretty face

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to Yggi11 [2007-05-18 02:53:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, she does have quite a nice face, doesn't she? I was blessed with a bunch of good and appropriate stock models that way. I'm glad you like the changes I've made since the sketch--a large part of that is based on both the stock model's appearance in her photos, and on the suggestions that were made in the comments on the the sketch. Stereotypical elements seemed appropriate given the fact that she's not going to get too large of an introduction or an abundance of character development before the heat is on, so to speak.

Thanks for the praise on the idea, too. I had fun thinking that stuff up, and most of it just occurred to me without a lot of painful concentration.

Hmm... let me see now... there's a half-rat magic dude lurking around with a spell that can manipulate cloth (like, for instance, make a gag impossible to remove), and the *hot* fortune teller babe has a costume with metal bracelets attached to long panels of fluttering fabric... hmm... What could *possibly* go wrong?
