Interestingly I watched the sequel Fievel Goes West before watching the first movie An American Tail. I wasΒ really young back then soΒ I naturallyΒ assumed that the sequel was the first movie since it was the first one I saw.Β XD
Either way, both movies have strong nostalgic value for me but the original American Tail was the one that made meΒ appreciate my parents even more than I already did. (The Land Before Time contributed to that as well.)

I had both An American Tail and its sequel Fievel Goes West on VHS as a child...Still do have 'em, actually! Loved both of 'em to death when I was a boy. I haven't seen either of them in a few years...but rewatching them as an adult, I must admit I didn't like them as much as I did when I was little. In particular I kind of though the whole "Fievel and his family keep missing each other by just that little" plot point from the first movie a little bit on the mean-spirited side of things. Not to mention as an adult I found the story structure a bit more awkward than I did as a kid, but I guess that's something that would only be problematic as an adult-that's not something the average child would care about The sequel wasn't that bad for a sequel not involving Don Bluth, though. Not my favorite movie, but I have fond memories of it from my childhood, so even if I don't like it as much as I once did (I have several movies that's happened to me with), I still have a special soft spot for it, and this definitely brought a few of 'em back. Good job on this little fella
I must say, I find Don Bluth to be...really hit and miss when it comes to his animated films. Secret of NIMH is probably one of my two favorite animated movies ever (Brave Little Toaster being the other)...I guess that's not a shock considering my avatar? But oh man did he nosedive in the early '90s. Rock-a-Doodle, Thumbelina, and A Troll in Central Park (particularly A Troll in Central Park) have gotta be among some of my least favorite animated movies I've ever seen, quite a drop down in quality! I'm not sure I can name another director with such a wild variance in quality of their films, but then again, that's only IMO...

The sequel was decent, but I don't think it holds up as well for me as it once did ^^. Don Bluth's first three films were definitely his best. His 90s films were definitely below average with a few exceptions - Rock A Doodle, beautiful to look at but more holes in the story than swiss cheese, Anastasia, which wasn't brilliant but was nonetheless coherent, and Titan AE, which I felt had a decent plot going for it.

I preferred it as a kid because it was 'lighter and softer', plus when I was that age I loved cowboy/western themes ^^.

They just tend to fill those movies which risque jokes that any adults in the audience would get as far as I'm aware.
