Description Finished linen smock with Swiss lace on the collar and cuffs.

Half finished bodys. currently basket reed boned linen but will be covered in silk soon (as I just cut it out.) also, there'll be straps.

Thanks to ColeV for the idea of stitching on the mocked up stays.

not my favorite pic. very hard to get any contrast with all that white....

It's *almost* done. I should have pictures up by the end of the week.

I've always wondered about basket reed boning. I've seen it at hobby stores and the like, but always hesitated buying it. What type did you use?

this was ordered from joann fabrics online. 3/16" flat reed. it's pretty weak so unless you are doing continuous boning channels like in 18th C styles or earlier think it'd be too week to be much good. it also works better doubled up in channels. the stuff I used on my 18th C stays is much stronger but much more expensive.

the contrast seems fine to me. only thing i can think of is maybe use a dark sheet for the background so the grey shadows dont throw off the eye.

Thanks, I was very pleased with how the silhouette came out myself.

I also really like the sewing on the mockup idea. Definitely will make corset-making easier for me in the future.

This isn't actually a mock up, it's just the interior layers of the final product. I did make a mock up for this but I made it out of cardboard and masking tape.

Oh I see! I would still sew a mockup, though . . . my corset-making skills are not that great yet.

Beautiful work, your stitching looks flawless! What is your pattern source. I am trying to get more in to authentic historical costuming preferably Elizabethan, what resources do you use.

The stitching looks good here because I did it on the machine (normally I'd hand sew but this is on a time crunch).

I used a variety of sources for this. The best was Patterns of Fashion 4 by Janet Arnold. Patterns of Fashion on the 16th and 17th century also has relevant info, especially if you want to do more costuming from this era.

Corsets and Crinolines by Nora Waugh and the Tudor Tailor were both also helpful.

Awesome! So going to do a full Elizabethan?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Goldenspring In reply to Verdaera [2009-03-03 00:10:15 +0000 UTC]

not quite. The idea is to make a costume for the 400th anniversary of Samuel De Champlain's 1609 arrival on Lake Champlain. So technically it'll be french, rather than English (though maybe not in style at this point) or very late Elizabethan
