Description It's been a while since my last update. Got a few more things done that I felt were worthy of sharing. The receiver and internals(that are done so far) are all serialized, the stock is 100% finished, and I added a scope on top to see what it would look like. It looks like the pistol grip will be getting changed too because I actually screwed it up hard core, which thankfully, can't be seen from the outside

Anyways, enjoy and feel free to leave feedback as always.

Wouldnt wanna be on the wrong end of that!
You'r one of the best 3D modellers I've seen on this site.

That's probably one of the best compliments I've ever received. Thanks for that! I really feel honored that my work is that good

So is this an actual project? Are you testing it/planning to?

I don't see much point in countering the recoil of what seems to be a 4.8x45mm round, it will just add weight and reduce accuracy with a weighted gas piston attached to the barrel.

But still cool project, keep it up.

Right now this is on a hobby/just for fun basis, but it will definitely be part of a future resume as a way of showing "Yea, this is what I do in my spare time just playing around." If I get enough money put away for a serious investment, I would probably contract a machinist to build me the parts, or do it myself, but that won't be for a long while lol.

I'm sure you mean the 6.8mm, but the reality is that even the 5.56mm bares uncontrollable recoil on automatic fire, which is why the M16 was decidedly kept on burst-fire only. Also, almost all modern battle rifles/assault rifles in production today are designed to implement the most liberal use of composites and polymers to reduce weight. My design also incorporates only 1 additional part into the cyclic action of the weapon, so weight is a non-issue. The focal point of this system is to be able to choose the necessary caliber for a given task, and be able to confidently employ it without the drawbacks of recoil and target reacquisition after each subsequent shot, whether on semi or full-automatic.

Oh its the SPC, I read "4.8x45" on the side of the rifle , I guess its 6.8x43.

I am not nor do I pretend to be an engineer or weapons expert, but other experts say that DI guns are more accurate since the barrel is closer to free floating than piston guns if you will, so wouldn't an even heavier piston system attached to the barrel effect its harmonics even worse than a standard piston system?

But I guess it would be useful for shorter ranges which is the only rage full auto can really be used.

Good luck with your project! and hope to see more renders.

well the M16 and it's variants are the only DI guns in the world, and there are reasons for that. The most notable is that it is a very dirty, and very hot auto-loading action, which does a lot of damage and wear to the rifle over time. Another thing to note is that the SiG 550 rifle has a full-length piston system, and it is the most accurate assault rifle in the world. The Swiss disqualified everything from the competition that could not shoot sub-MOA groups at 300 meters. If you look at the SIG internals compared to an AK, they function almost identically. So with serious refinement, the piston system proves to me a much more reliable, and accurate alternative to the gas impingement system.

I hope I'm not coming off as snobby in any way, I just am trying to give you as much info as possible, so that you can understand my intent behind my design Thanks for commenting though, I appreciate it.

Also, there will be many more renders to come!

As far as I know there are other DI guns out there but I think the AR family are the only well known DI guns. Yes I always hear that the 550 is a finer quality AK and thus it is almost as reliable yet more accurate.

And do not worry about snobbery lol. Must be fun designing your own firearm, I am into engineering stuff but I suck at math lol.

Well from about a days worth of research, I still stand on my convictions that the ARs are the only DI guns in the world. As for the 550, I would argue that it's even more reliable than an AK, simply because I did a big research paper on the rifle, from birth to Swiss military contract, and one of the tests it was forced to endure was a 1 week freeze period in the alps, and a soldier had to be able to *KICK* the action loose and fire the weapon in under 15 seconds. It basically takes everything that is already great in the AK, and perfects it entirely.

But hey, if you wanted to exchange e-mails/info sometime, I'd be glad to teach you some basic CAD software skills, and I'll teach you all about the inner workings of guns Just let me know, I love teaching it. My friends find it fascinating too, so they're always getting tips/pointers from me hehe.

To be honest I had no idea of what firearms apart from the AR15/10 family that used the DI system, but I typed direct gas impingement in wikipedia and I found these two:

I also confirmed that they both use DI from other sources.

Thanks for the offer, I plan to get into the shooting hobby in the near future so I might need some tips do you shoot/own firearms yourself? As for CAD software I do not really need it unless I wanted to build a functional object, I use C4D which is good for what I do.

Well of course there are old rifles with the system, but I was talking about modern-day weapons, which have all but abandoned that automatic system, besides the M-16. Thing is, that system was purposely conceived for large-caliber weapons with heavy recoil springs, which the AR family completely lacks, aside from the 7.62mm models. Even so, the dispute between piston vs DI has revealed piston taking the win in every scenario.

I do shoot a lot myself. I have an AKM, German Kar98k, Russian M91/30 Mosin-Nagant, also an M44 Nagant, Yugo M48 Mauser, Turkish M21 Mauser, and a Walther P1. My next rifle will be a SIG 556 SWAT Classic, and then I'm going to start looking at class 3 guns.

Yea I used to play around with 3D Studio software, but I work so much better on CAD, especially since I mastered it in school, so it's a breeze for me. I have a very hard time making shells of things, because I need to know that the things you see on the outside have purpose. When you model things from the inside-out, you really get the sense of functionality which is what I enjoy.

I also love making things from inside out but it is hard to do from googled images, usually you have to pay for decent gun blueprints even if the design is not patented.

Nice collection, I can only dream for full auto, the shop I ordered from had problems importing a full auto AIRSOFT gun! lol Gun laws are a joke in Europe, people here are terrified of guns. But its ok I don't really want full auto, I am interested in accurate rifles(bolt and semi) maybe in the future even a handgun for home defense, even though using it would ensure a prison sentence for me, but I'd rather be alive in jail then dead lol.

That's why it's so much easier to just make your own parts. (At least it is for me lol.) All I use for references and such are cutaway views of guns I am interested in.

If you want YOUR RIGHT to self-preservation, you should move to America man. Sure we have libtarded progressives running the country now, but as long as the Constitution stands, they cannot touch ANY of our rights.

Hell yeah man, I really like America and Americans, your way of life, way of thinking...
I really do not feel European at all, I do not hate being European but sometimes I really feel like a fish out of the water. Joining the local military soon and maybe when I save something up I will start thinking of moving.

Keep fighting for your rights!

If you are considering what state would be the best to move to, go to Texas. Best damn state in the union. I live in Wisconsin right now, but I will be moving to Texas as soon as I can find a career after school.

As far as gun laws go I think that is one of the best states but I need to do some more research on geography, weather and other non-gun related stuff. And I was just looking for contacts living in the US for that purpose so if you feel like it add me on msn.

Besides all that I need to find a job there! I would join the military but you need to be a US citizen for at least 5 years to do that...

Looks really nice. But I would make the buttstock a bit thicker. It seems to be a new design trend in rifles like the ACR or SCAR to make the stock very stable.

GundamGPO3 In reply to Seth45 [2010-01-28 21:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Good tip, but I was way ahead of you on that one This stock is actually a whole half inch thicker than the original 550 series stock. It doesn't look like it in the render, because the "open" position really exposes a lot of the inner mechanics of the adjustable sections. I was thinking of adding a slightly thicker cheek piece though. However, for now I'm focusing on finishing up the inside, so I'll revisit some of the external features after the operational portion of this rifle is complete.
