Description My scanner hates me. Some days, the feeling is mutual. Let's just pretend that this looks somewhat like the original, shall we?
Aarrgh.

Moving on...

This was supposed to be for little Melly's Transformers Month. So it was due yesterday. *looks at clock* Make that day-before-yesterday. But in my defense, all Biskit broke loose last night, and I didn't get to even start drawing until after 11:00. But I had a cool picture in my head, and wanted to draw it. If Melly's TF Month does nothing more than make me suck it up and draw, then she will have done more good than she'll ever know!

All right, all together now: BLAST YOU, ALEX!!! That crest is fragging HARD to make look good from any angle other than the one you drew it from! But it's so awesome that now we must love and perpetuate it!

To the two or so people who might remember me mentioning the part of my story that this is from, HUSH. I'll get it written eventually, (I work on it more nights than not, and think about it CONSTANTLY, trying to work things out. If I could write by thinking, it'd have been posted months ago..........................)

There's no bellows because it would have hashed the composition, and hey - it's Cybertron, where I'm sure they have automated bellows. And the anvil is wonky because they wouldn't be making horseshoes, eh? (And OK, it's wonky just because I drew it wonky, too. I confess!)

Blacksmithing = Schmexxiest occupation EVAR. I thought about having Megsy's crest folded in, 'cause it's not like he's showing off for anyone. But having been lucky enough to have gotten to mess around with some of this stuff, I am telling you right now that if you're pounding the tar outta molten metal, you're gonna have any crest you've got up! It's the most power-trippin' thing in the world! "That's right, iron, I bend you to my will!!!"

((And yes, I know it should probably be melted down and cast. But that'd be so much less awesome!!!))

Thanks for making me draw this, Mel. I like it. It's imperfect, but I by-Primus got it drawn! This is the first time I've taken reference photos to get the pose right. (Thank you, Ironhide. He is an awesome pretend blacksmith)

I think I'll try to suck in my pride and ask for a real critique, now that I know how they work......... *hides* I KNOW it has flaws! I did the best I could!

Love and Big Red Robot Hugs to all,
Prime

Done in Prismacolor markers, with here and there a little colored pencil.

I do not own Megatron. Go ahead and claim him, Hasbro - I wish you luck in evading his wrath at any humans who dare to say they own him!!!

I screamed like a fangirl (well... I am a fangirl) when I got to the Forge scene and I remembered this picture. Megatron is working on the Sheer Pure Awesomeness in this picture. And he seems to know it. As usual.
His crown (he was created with it, fraggers!) just adds to this all.

I know -- isn't he funny? He's just convinced that anything he does is AWESOME because he is doing it.

Thanks for all your comments!!

The crest may be hard to draw, but it sure looks good on him. After seeing this piece in person at BotCon I knew I needed to fave it. Very well-done.

Wow... this is just so Megatron, if he'd chosen a "civilian" rather than "military" career

I saw the pencils and inks leading up to this, and now they have colours I can really feel Megs venting his anger on that little piece of metal.

Your colours are sodding epic yet again, and I love how you've given him a matte shine rather than a glossy shine

just one teeny weeny crit - his right arm (up in the air) looks "off" but that's only apparent after much ing has been done!

British swears > American swears. *you said sodding, you said sodding, I'm telling!*

I dunno what I coulda done with his arm. I guess it is a bit short, but I'm not sure of that! I didn't want to get anything out of proportion, and was really sticking to the way Ironhide's arm looked when he posed for me... His forearm seemed longer, too, but it's also a lot skinnier. I didn't want Megs's arm to end up waaaaay up over his head.................. meh. I'm ok with a wonky arm, if that's the worst of my problems!

Yay!

*hides under your foot in case your motherboard comes to tell me off*

Now I've looked at it again, I think it looks "off" because G1 Megatron doesn't have a real shoulder, he just has his upper arms attached to his chest Perhaps it the lack of shoulder musculature that made his arm look odd..?

coraxonyx [2009-05-05 01:10:18 +0000 UTC]

I think the thing that's bothering you about the raised arm is the foreshortening. The section from the elbow to the hand is a little stubby to my eye.

I like the combination of the elements from the G1 frame with the Megs: Origin crest. It's like a little mini-biography of His Nibs. I agree that the face is quite good. It's surprisingly tranquil, given the subject. And your pose is very realistic. There's no "Draw the Marvel Way" hyperkineticism there. It makes it look a little static, but that may just be an artifact of the way we have been "trained" to look at comics thanks to the "House of Ideas" (get CiD Megs to go off on Rob Lilefield sometime if you want to bust a gut, btw.)

I can't speak to the color, as you said the scanner butchered it, but the lines on the legs are vair, vair smexy for some reason. Maybe I just like strong thighs. The tools seem a little small but, maybe it's just that the blacksmith I know is a great big guy, so he has oversized tools.

I know what I'd like to see. Some bright sparks coming up from the fire in the background to indicate that there is forced air under there somewhere. It'd give you a source for your highlights, too.

Overall, very nice. The figure in particular is good. I bet monochromatic 'ol Megs is a little harder to keep interesting that some other 'bots. I can't wait to see what else you come up with!

Thanks for your thoughts, Little Pal.

I'm totally going to "Ask Megatron" about this Rob Lilefiend <--HA! typo too choice to change!

Design elements - I'm glad you like. I just throw on his tank tread backpack whenever I'm trying to show he's not in Earth/Gun mode, and hope it works! I can't draw all that kibble! (But at the same time, I find his Earth mode BORING by comparison.)

Tools: I had him holding a much bigger hammer, but he'd need a smaller, more precise one to work on a little thing, so I smallered it. I probably should have made his plier-things longer though. Uh, he's made of metal and doesn't burn as easily! Yeah, that'll do as an excuse!

I also really wanted to do sparks, but I didn't know how to do them in a way that wouldn't make the background seem polka-dotted, and mess with the overall flat, graphic nature of this picture. So I compromised by using colored pencils to accentuate the lighter areas in the scribbled background. But yes, the fire is mostly fail. I just didn't know how to make it work. Spikeier upward-y shapes of fire/light, maybe... I dunno!

Hey Megs old man -- my little human friend thinks your thighs are smexy! *snerk* (I hafta tease him, occasionally, because his reactions are so joyous. )

Mmmmmmmmm, that's some SMEXY Blacksmith!Megatron action goin' on there. Also, your remark, "That's right, iron, I bend you to my will!!!" tickled me something fierce. XD It strikes me as a very Megatron thing to say, and, frighteningly enough, I can hear him saying it in my head. O_o Prime, I think you need to come reclaim your ex-warlord from my brain's lost-and-found. If he'd let anybody claim him, that is.

I think you're right in that the highlights would look better in person than through the scanner. It's the traditional medium artist's bane to deal with uncooperative scanners that murder coloring jobs. However, the power of the piece does indeed come through, and that's what matters. ^_^ I do hate to nitpick, but Megs' upraised arm strikes me as a little bit off. I don't know how, exactly, but it does. Sorry. All in all, though, I love this piece and I can't wait to read the corresponding plotpoint it depicts! *eagereagereager*

Thanks little pal!

It's funny - on the one hand, it is good to hear what is working and what isn't in a picture. But at the same time, I always respond with feelings that go something like, "But it's fragging DONE; I can't FIX any of it...!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBlackwood In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2009-05-06 00:26:07 +0000 UTC]

Mrrrfff, sorry 'bout that, Bossbot. I know how that feels. I did that with a piece I made a while back. I looked back at it months later, after I'd colored it and posted it, and I stared . . . the character's arms looked like they had no shoulder connection points to the body. Fail!

Regardless, your figure-drawing is very skilled AND you dared to draw our dear subject from an angle that wasn't the easiest (you cited the headfrill specifically, and I can totally see where you're coming from). This, I think, makes you a better artist than if you'd just chosen to draw him head-on or in some other manner. Does that make sense? Hope so.

Anyway, I reiterate, you did admirably on this piece. Don't come from it wanting to Fix something in it; rather, use it as another stepping stone on your journey as an artist. You've certainly improved in the time I've known you, and I'm certain you'll continue to do so as time goes on.

. . . Holy slag. Here I am talking The Prime's audio off about perserverance. That would be my que to just post the comment. *salutes* Blessings to you and yours, Prime! ^_^

Heh thanks pal.

It is a big step for me to be willing to post things I feel are imperfect. I was scared stiff of drawing anything else after I finished my famous/infamous Prime and Megs pic, because that took me SO INCREDIBLY LONG YOU HAVE NO IDEA. MONTHS. But to realize that I can do something in a day or two that is OK is a good thing for me. I'm trying not to be so freaked-out now.

MBlackwood In reply to Ha-HeePrime [2009-05-08 23:43:20 +0000 UTC]

Welcome, buddy.

Awww, you were scared? Well, I can see how that would be a natural reaction, but there's no need for it. We all love you and your work, Prime, and you know it. I'm certain we've let you know on enough occasions to ensure that. XD Your hard work for all those months on that piccy really and truly paid off; it's certainly one of the best pieces in your gallery, and probably one of the best Prime-and-Megatron-not-slagging-each-other's-afts-all-to-Pit-for-a-change pieces on all of dA. True story!

But quick sketches can be marvelously rewarding if you plan them out ahead of time. Your piccy here demonstrates that, as does a really quite nice thingummie I knocked out in about an hour using my Bamboo tablet and The GIMP. I think I may be posting that someday soon, at which time I will leave that judgment up to you and our fellow dA'ers.

Good for you for overcoming your freak-out tendency and thank you for sharing your art with us humble rookie-bots. It's always a treat and a pleasure.

Everything about this picture screams "POWERFUL", from the fire in the background to Megatron getting ready to pound that piece of molten metal again. Colors are beautiful, especially the glow on Megatron's armor. BRILLIANT!!
