Description *Updated* - redone the contrast and background.

Jaina Proudmoore, for those of you who don't play World of Warcraft , is one of the leaders of the Alliance faction. A Mage and once ruler of Theramore.

This is a digitally coloured pencil drawing. It was created using a 2B mechanical pencil on Bristol Board. The digital element was done on PS using a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet.

Very similar to Aribeth's pose from NWN1, did you use that as a reference?

hairywookiee In reply to Asynca [2010-11-23 19:28:28 +0000 UTC]

I didn't use any specific reference for Jaina (apart from getting the armour/costume details from the WoW model), I've always liked that sort of 'upshot' pose and keep playing with it in different ways (my Morrigan pic uses the same pose but in a more extreme angle).

sick talent. After seeing 'An invitation for a beating' I'm kind of curious as to what the original pencil drawing looked like.

Wicked work. the lineart, the crisp shading and the unique style are all so great to look at.

Only critique is maybe should have went with traditional background to match the foreground, the pencil work looks too good for the PS gradient . And the hands look a bit too masculine for me, otherwise fantastic.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! The abstract background was used to make her entirely the focus of the piece, although, like the fingers, it might be worth a re-visit in the future to see if I could improve the piece overall. That said I'm really happy with the way she's turned out, glad you like the style, it's one I'm working on mixing traditional and digital.

Others have mentioned it, so I'll just say it once then move on: Jaina has grandma hands, and the effect is pretty jarring.

Moving on...

There is a considerable amount to like about this pic, and as a huge Jaina fan, I can definitely say that you've captured the character's essence quite well. The use of colour is pretty fantastic, with an excellent contrast between the purple, white and gold, gives her a noble, almost regal appearance. Her pose and expression are also very good. Aside from the grandma hands, the only other thing I could suggest improving for next time would be the lack of background, but the pic doesn't really suffer due to its lack. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the comments, great to get some feedback on my art, especially when it's as constructive as this!

The fingers are suffering from some serious over-detailing, something I've now learnt I will have to fix that at some point, less is certainly more in this case.

Looking at Jaina's NPC in-game I thought I'd make more of a contrast of the purple and gold detailing, which has worked really well and I'm glad it's been well recieved.

I did think about doing an Icecrown Citadel background but I was wary of the background taking the focus away from her, so I did an abstracted 'icy' background instead. I'm working on some more WoW art with more intricate backgrounds so I'll see how that works out. Thanks for the comments on the colouring, it was a learning curve to digitally paint what is a pencil drawing but it certainly has come out well.

Hey, no problem, dude. I much as I do like the good old-fashioned ego stroke review, constructive criticism is also very useful, and I'm glad to hear that I had something helpful to say. Keep up the awesome work! (particularly with the colouring, it's good to hear that it's working so well for you!)

I like it!
It's hard to find fan art of Lady Proudmoore, and I believe u catch her charisma in this draw. Very good, the details are so nice, I love the way u paint the shadows on her staff, the creases on her clothes are awesome
I believe the only thing that u can fix a lil are the hands... remember the hands of young womans are more delicate, and with less lines...
But the rest is perfect well done

hairywookiee In reply to Kastarnia [2010-05-23 13:29:24 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like her Yes, Jania artwork is a little thin on the ground which is why I thought I'd pick her. I'm looking at doing some more WoW characters, maybe from the Horde side this time.
The hands do need more work, I went a little overboard with the detail in her hands in retrospect but thanks for the pointers, it all helps in producing better art!

Love the design and your style of colouring. I've been in with the horde for too long.. I didn't even know she existed. Maybe I should switch side for a change.

Thanks so much I was thinking about doing a switch to the Horde myself but I'm so used to the Ally side of things I'd get lost very quickly lol! The colouring is something I'm working on as primarily I'm a pencil artist, the thing with Jaina is that all that purple and gold made her quite striking.

You have some lovely pencil work in your gallery! I used to do only b&w work myself and it was so hard for me to learn how to colour.

I'm using what I know about colour from my marker rendering days, and as you said, it can be a struggle coming from b&w work but I'm learning some new tricks in Photoshop which are helping.

Thanks Yep, the fingers do need more work, cheers for pointing that out as I can work on that aspect! (I'm working on A4 size paper so it gets a little difficult with the detail at that size which isn't helping)

Daandric In reply to hairywookiee [2010-05-22 00:05:26 +0000 UTC]

well, actually, you should lose some details on those fingers. They radiate too much. The fingers don't look like they are from hers body.

hairywookiee In reply to Daandric [2010-05-22 07:51:01 +0000 UTC]

As the viewpoint looks up at her, there is a little bit of forced perspective with her left hand, I was trying to give her left hand more interest with the way the fingers splayed out a bit, give the pose a bit more drama. As for the detail, I'm a bit of a detail freak lol!
