Hey everyone. I've been working on a personal project that started out as my senior thesis in school. It's a few concept designs from some awesome literature! I've been reading this book called Halo: Cryptum by Greg Bear. It's related to the Halo game franchise, and I thought it'd be awesome to visualize some of the scenes in the novel.This creature is called the Merse. It patrols a crater lake and protects an island, intimidating any in intruders. This creature is very large, hunting small whales and other larger fish.

This thing scares me, and I think that was exactly what it was put in that lake to do. I sure don't want to mess with this thing. If the Didact wasn't fond of them... well, his wife shops well.

I'd for sure be scared to see that thing, even if I was a Spartan. It is both very odd and (almost) peaceful, though I doubt the creature is anything but that.

I love the way sperm whales are known to eat giant squids and this creature has ridiculously big squid-like tentacles.

Oh, how awesome. I didn't realize that. Yes, the irony!! If you see closely, the Merse has a horn tip at the front to ram into the whales. It would crush their bones and incapacitate them. Then the clawed feeding tentacles would tear it apart! Lovely, ain't it?

I thought they were about car-sized and looked more like lily pads on top? I haven't read the book in a while so I could be wrong.. Regardless, that's an AWESOME creature concept. I really like the texture on the tentacles..
