Description First Tutorial, and I tried to keep it basic and simple. It is geared towards beginners and is very laid-back and sketchy.

*Hatching is a very basic art technique. It's used in traditional inkworks as well as comics, foreign and local. The "preset square hatching" technique, it is found in Japanese How to Draw Manga: Pen & Tone Techniques by Ryo Toudo and is ALSO featured extensively in the American artist Gary Simmons's The Technical Pen. Look it up if you'd like to learn more, as both are great resources.

This pattern is often sold as a screen tone and is included in Computones, but you can mimic the effect yourself, getting more control over the placement.

Enjoy!

Hey Loom! What kind of Opaque White ink have you found to be most helpful? And do you have a list of Pros and Cons for them?

I am using Pro White- but I have to use multiple layers and some of the mistakes still show through @ - @ )

HeyTayHolt In reply to Rizzy-Rizzy [2015-01-26 08:00:44 +0000 UTC]

Questions... Are you using them primarily for effects or primarily for whiteout?

1. Do you want to be able to go over the white with more ink or paint later? A lot of whiteout products do a good job but it's hard to go over them later.

Rizzy-Rizzy In reply to HeyTayHolt [2015-01-26 15:28:32 +0000 UTC]

I use it for highlights/effects and yes as well as a whiteout. ; v ; )

And I do have the bad habit of wanting to keep layering whites and lines to get it to look just right. orzΒ

It may also be the paper I am using at this time! I admit, it isn't very good.. \' D But I want to use it up.

Thank you. This actually goes by really quickly, though I would like to make some pages to scan sometimes too. Other than that, it can be very good for creating custom texture gradient to the individual space/art.

Can I ask where you bought your pen? I'm fishing around trying to find one like that but I'm failing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to DrugstoreRomeo [2011-08-27 11:25:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use a variety of pens, actually. Anything that has a stiff consistency will work for you in the case of doing effects, since for effects, you don't want too much line variation. In any case, technical and drafting pens will work. In the example I'm using a nib holder and nib tip, and the nib tib is of the stiffer variety.

I believe they're Deleter brand. If you'd like, I'll find some available websites for you. I bought mine off of eBay at the time, but I believe places like Jetpens and Akadot Retail must have something similar.

DrugstoreRomeo In reply to HeyTayHolt [2011-08-27 11:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Online is my best bet because Australia isn't host to most art supply stores like the rest of the country (WE LAG ALOT OF STUFF DX).
I'll surf around Ebay and see if I can find a good pen but some websites would be lovely if you could extend a hand.

wow! looks like it'd take quite awhile to draw in so many crosshatch squares... but the effect is totally worth it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to onetealeaf [2011-07-10 21:06:21 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it might take a while in the beginning, but any kind of hatching gets easier and easier with time, and your hand naturally gets trained to do the strokes, so never fear! It's not too bad! XD

Good tutorial by the way!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to RavenElement [2011-07-02 17:31:00 +0000 UTC]

You do? Oh, no! Did you buy a set or is it mix-and-match? Sometimes the thing can fit together rather tightly... Maybe it will work a little better with time. D:

And thanks! Sorry to hear about your trouble, though. That must be somewhat irritating, eh?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenElement In reply to HeyTayHolt [2011-07-03 13:31:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah D:
I heard you have to bend them right? But my nibs are too hard I cant bend them! ;___;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to RavenElement [2011-07-03 16:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Bend? What kind of nib and pen holder are you using?

Here! This is a really nice Youtube Video that shows you how to do it if you're having trouble! >>> [link]

Most just slide right in the holder. Sometimes, nibs might need to be cleaned if they're rusty, so they slide in easier, but most people don't usually acquire that sort of thing unless they're really into collecting: [link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenElement In reply to HeyTayHolt [2011-07-06 12:18:31 +0000 UTC]

The pen holder is Nikko N-17 and The tip is Nikko G, Nikko No.357 and Nikko no.5. My friend go them for me from Japan but i'm not sure if the nib is supposed to go with that holder ;_____;

Thank You for being so ready to help me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to RavenElement [2011-07-06 20:45:45 +0000 UTC]

I have those nibs, but I don't have that holder (mine is Tachikawa holder, which actually is compatible with all my Japanese nibs and quite a lot of my European ones). Did the links help you out any? Here is an Akadot link for your pen holder type: [link] There are all sorts fo pen holders here: [link] It seems like your pen holder might be for maru tip only, but i won't be able to tell without looking at the insertion point for the nib. If this is the case, it might be too small for things like G nibs? Does it seem like your nibs are too big to fit into the pen holder grooves?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenElement In reply to HeyTayHolt [2011-07-08 06:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the nibs are too big! Thank You for the links!
the holder insertion point is a circle. something like this [link]
The black parts being carved out.

HeyTayHolt In reply to RavenElement [2011-07-12 20:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so that was it, huh? Are you going to try and order a proper holder for your nibs? My favorite is Tachikawa T-36, personally. It's comfy. It seems to hold all my Japanese nibs so far. Let me know how it goes!
