You are too hard on yourself. Aren't we all at times? The effort of making even an attempt at scales that are not all the same size, flat or one sided brings a wealth of detail to this fellow. The expression is icing on the cake.

Totally agree with you about the scales thing only instead of being lazy about them I get confused. Gotta do a lot more scale studies. Even though you hate drawing scales, I really love seeing the finished product. It adds such a level detail that wasn't there before. Loving the fishy fins on the side of its head and its overall mischievously fun demeanor. How in the world did you get it to grin like that?

I can understand about the scales. But unlike you. I suck so much at them. But yet you make it look so easy.

Lovely composition. Even though the design is simple and traditional, my eye was drawn all over the piece and the details on it. And traditional scalies aren't always my favorite, but this has a very balanced and beautiful design.

Good point about how willingness to draw scales figures into work ethic. I ought to apply this to my own work. Most of my dragon characters (not my main one, though) are scaled somewhere, and though I used to draw cartoon scales or scatter scales on my dragons I haven't done that as much so recently because it seemed like a lot of work when I was mainly focusing on the dragons' expression. I've only attempted to draw two heavily-scaled dragons over the past year and only managed to finish scaling the second of those, but perhaps I should return to that for revamps and future pieces.
Sorry for my comment being mostly irrelevant to the art... when I like a piece by you, I tend to just favorite it and run.

Weeell I dunno as it matters too much. If you prefer to draw expressions and like drawing expressions then you might get away with avoiding scales and be a successful artist regardless. Not all art is hyper-realistic minutia drawing. But it's still good to try, realize you need to study harder, do that, and learn something that is useful to you in the process.

XD I suck at scales too. However, instead of working on it, I've gotten to the point where I refuse to draw lizards or dragons.... I did a really cool dragon once, but now I can't find him, DX.

Dragons are reptiles. So it's natural they have scales. It's hard work, but it gives your dragon a look that's right. And you've done a very nice one. I like his/her morphology.
I've seen too much dragons with some shark or orca skin. A dragon is much more beautiful with scales and like I said it looks right.
Nice work. I hope will see it in colours.
