Description Here is an animal i was very excited to see in the wild for the first time, Shot was taken in the Lamar region of Yellowstone National Park.

Badgers are very very strong and aggressive animals here in North America, in Europe a different species used to be hunted for sport hence the term 'badgering' however the practice quickly discontinued here when it was discovered these animals could tear a full grown hound to pieces with there large claws, territorial disposition and I am in charge attitude.

Badgers can dig faster than a man with a shovel and are known for having intricate mazes of tunnels in there territory, this female badger had a tunnel over 40 yards long connecting to her den.

There territory is small no larger than a mile and a half and they spend there time digging for small mammals such as prarie dogs.

Coyotes will often hang around them keeping a safe distance hoping there digging will scare animals out of nearby escape tunnels for a quick snack.

Nice shot!

Thanks for the info also, it's always interresting to learn about animals I'd love to see one in the wild but it's a slim chance here in Holland.

Badgers from the UK are very very different and not nearly as viscous as the variety of them here in the states.

When the Europeans got here to America they were excited to continue the sport of badger hunting with dogs. They quickly learned that the badger here in america does not mess around and it tore the dogs apart. These guys are tough creatures.

wow! Thanks - i was such a badger lover as a kid but i never knew of the different types. In the UK many farmers are trying to cull the badgers saying they are giving their animals diseases even though there isnt any real proof. Im glad the badgers were bad ass enough to fight against those dogs i'm completly against animal hunting and think its cruel. Il definelty have to research the other types other then the uk badgers

i hve not seen one in the nature yet, but i do know how "unpleasant" they could be. as for hunters, i could never understand hunting for the trophys or breeding animals and then chase them. food is a different thing. too bad dogs paid the price...

I've only had the luck once, and thats so long ago, I was shooting slides. Damn I'm glad I don't have to shoot iso 100 pushed to 200 to get a marginal shot, I can shoot 400-800 and still get great images with digital.

Awesome shot! I love badgers. We have one in the prairie dog town at my park, but I am the only person working there that hasn't managed to see it. I have been up there at all hours, for hours at a time, and not seen it yet. All the other employees have seen it.

Last year, a visitor came down to the center and told me about two coyotes hanging around the badger. One got too close and took a swipe to the muzzle from those wicked claws. I wish I'd seen that...

Good shot of a difficult subject.
She should probably have a sign around her neck saying
“If you can read this sign you are too close”

Iamidaho In reply to JAHarrell [2009-06-11 02:12:19 +0000 UTC]

I was a good 55 yards or more away from its den when it emerged, there were other photographers but it made a line straight for me coming closer and closer, shortly after this shot i made a run for the car filling the frame at 800 mm was CLOSE enough for me lol.

She actually was just on her way to go out hunting , but still when a badger makes a bee line straight for you, its best to get out of its way!

Very nice picture of her. It hilites all the features: the size, distinctive fur, and those claws! A good catch, I'd say. I found Badger holes out in the desert near Murphy when I was out there, never saw a badger, though.

Author J.F. Dobie describes the somewhat complementary relationship 'tween badgers and coyotes in his classic Voice of the Coyote. A great read, I reccomend it as a good wildlife book, my own affinity of yotes notwithstanding.

Man, for just one week in Yellowstone!
