_backstory:

Born as a defective gem, Gold was once a member of Yellow Diamond's court. Because of his defectivity, Gold was unable to form a body around his gem if he came to lose it. When the court found out about him being defective, they decided to abandon him on Earth, taking away his body form. On Earth, a clueless craftsman found the gem, and took it to his place; his name was Alex, and he often work on machines and gears. He worked the gem until he gave it the shape of a gear, not knowing about it being a creature far different from a simple gem. Luckily, what Alex had done to the gem fixed Gold's inability to form a body, and so he was able to patiently regenerate. Neither of them knew the reason behind the repair; after that the two of them became really close, until eventually Alex died of aging.
Growing attached to the planet and keeping a grudge towards Homeworld who had abandoned him, Gold started to defend Earth, fighting along the Crystal Gems after discovering the Rebellion.
