Description These pictures focus more on the mask, and I took off the red cape. The costume stands on it's own without it, believe me.

My Plague Doctor based, with kind permission, on the artworks of `hibbary
Artworks for basis;
The Grand Doctor
Eve of the first snow
Stormy Skies

The beak is poplar wood painted and finished. The mask is is leather, straps, and screws. The rudimentary goggles are leather and caps/covers from a rifle sight!
Yeah, they fogged over sometimes, but I could actually see and breath in this costume.
The frock was a historical pattern Frocky and I selected.
I am wearing one (of a pair) Steampunk Shock Gauntlet made by =Winneganfake that are actually Frocky's. See them here. And sadly, I couldn't fit my palm through the palm-strap, my hands are much larger than Frockys, but I wrapped a watch around it for a nice effect. The work is to beautiful not to use!
And no, I did not buy a black wig or dye my hair, so I used my real hair. Hope it's not to out of character.

Please look through my Costumes and props for more photos of this. And pop by =FrockTarts for more of her pics of this and her works.
Much thanks to Frocky for her hard work and my mum for helping with my mask!

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Overall/Vision- The Plague Doctor's a classic character, and this costume truly does it justice. The elements chosen to make it up work perfectly for the character, whether they're historically accurate or not. You've taken the character and made it your own with this piece, which is the best part of doing any kind of historical concept.

Elements

(The gauntlet's a piece of my own work, so I'm deliberately leaving it out of this critique.)

Coat/furs- Great choice- the cut almost lends it an air of being protective gear as well as garment,

Top Hat- This piece is the only thing that tweaks me about the costume, and the reason behind the four star ratings- the hat's got the look of a pre-fab piece- it clashes with both the uniqueness of the mask and the rest of the outfit. My only big recommendation would be to either batter and decorate this hat to hell and back to go with the mask, or do another hat or hood in matching materials to the mask. Speaking of...

The mask- Brilliant. Utterly brilliant- the wood blends indistinguishably into the leather, giving it the appearance of being a single piece. the belts, rose sigil, all add further to it- it's a great personalization. And the use of rifle sights for the eyes? Ingenious- you've done a great job of integrating them.

Thank you so much for these words, I really like hearing how to improve on a costume!

I was afraid dolling up the hat would kill the original artwork concept...
but you know what.... why the heck didn't I?!
I could have found something, like a gear or some bones...
Cripes, I even have crow skulls I could have put on it!

I was most worried the wood would look to fake, and the leather to, well, kind of hand-baggy polished.
I almost didn't tone between the wood and leather, thinking people wouldn't like not seeing the contrast. I am glad I did, it looks much more natural.
And the goggles, I felt so cheap, I just inserted them through the leather. I though people would think they looked too quick made and buggy.

And do you recognize the fabric as the same as your shirt Frocky made you?

Thanks again!

Dude. Crow skulls are a MUST on this kind of outfit. Sounds perfect to me.

Well, if it doesn't match, it certainly doesn't show in the pic- and as for the goggles, those just plain work perfectly- doesn't look like a cheap attachment job at all.

...actually, no, I hadn't recognized. Cool!

The plain hat stuck out to me too. Maybe because I go so over top, no pun intended, with mine.

Amazing! ^__^
Erm, the critique says that Plague Doctors are "classic characters"... But, I've never heard of them (maybe because I'm not European)... Who are they? What do they do? Why the raven masks? They look cool though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InKibus In reply to blind-dancer [2010-08-19 01:15:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
They are/were sort of a 'hazmat suit' for old doctors.
During times of plagues, the whole mask and beak was suppose to serve a purpose.
Here's a little write up on them [link]
And here's a group dedicated to them- [link]
Lately, like my costume, they have sort of gotten this spiffy steamupunky treatment and look, and are sort of a new trend in creepy design.

Paranoid about swine flu much?

Really cool, Inks. Nice job.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InKibus In reply to Caelkriss [2009-11-05 02:36:03 +0000 UTC]

Tehhee, I picked this before swine flu.... and my sister picked this [link] as her costume too!
And her boyfriend went as a plague-masked grim reaper.
And I was (and still am) pretty sick on Halloween, so my paranoia is about a 9 on a 10 scale.

But thanks, it was a rather rewarding piece to accomplish.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caelkriss In reply to InKibus [2009-11-05 04:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. Well, I personally know like five swine flu survivors (that DIDN'T get the vaccine), and they all said it was like having the regular flu for a couple days longer than usual. So, if you don't have any other health problems that could complicate anything, you basically just treat it like any other flu.

You should definitely be proud of this piece. Very spooky cool.

wow, this is really awesome. I love your costumes!!
Those Plague Doctor masks are so creepy, I'd die of fear, let alone the plague/having walnut-sized pus-filled pustules cauterized with a poker/more infections resulting, just by the sight of the doctor..

InKibus In reply to dragonladych [2009-11-14 02:00:03 +0000 UTC]

Very very funny, I never intended to make it 'feminine' at all...
but even copying the picture so close, there is something totally refined and even elegant to the whole costume that says quite easily it could be female, actually. I like that!

I definitely agree!! Have you ever thought of making this kind of stuff to sell at 'cons (or just on some place like etsy)? I have a feeling it'd go over really really well

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InKibus In reply to devilishlysweetplus [2009-11-28 02:34:10 +0000 UTC]

Actually, my sister offers her handmade garments and custom orders.
Most of my stuff is so tailored to me and I would dread making something for someone else.
But that being said, I have just had a first-time serious beg for an elaborate costume in themes like we tend to make!
So, our following is growing and sales are becoming easier to try all the time.

devilishlysweetplus In reply to InKibus [2009-11-29 02:23:25 +0000 UTC]

I did see when your sister was selling off some of her old stuff, if I was the same size, I'd be having a seriously hard time keeping my money in my pocket...I understand about putting effort in to something thats for you, thats really the worlds loss though!!

ColonelLiamRoss [2009-11-01 18:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Nifty, nifty, nifty! So did you cover the beak with leather, then? What a fantastic effect!

And hoooly crap, hair! When did that happen? For some reason, I always assumed your hair is naturally dark but apparently not!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

InKibus In reply to ColonelLiamRoss [2009-11-14 01:57:52 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the leather only covers the face, i achieved a really antiqued mahogany look for the wood.
And there are screws on that too. I will post a close up, it turned out better that I thought it would!
Yeah, that HAIR. I gots lots of it, and it grows fast. It was barely shoulder length last Halloween. I am actually planning to chop it again, it grows so fast I knoooow it'll be back soon enough.
Actually, I am a brown-copper-blond and grey streaked hair color naturally, the light makes me look blonder. And no, I am not black, I just dye it for the total effect in my costuming.

And my hair grows rather fast, almost annoyingly fast.
