so, this is the piece that broke my seven year art hiatus when i decided to commit to building a portfolio and going to school, if anyone will have me. i've sporadically done a bit here and there, hardly even at recreational level, and never finished anything - primarily because i felt it was all sh*t and felt too discouraged to work at improving. i drew and redrew this far too many times, fretted over micro-details, made choices amongst tens of tiny changes, and learned a lot. eventually i let go due to frustration and this was the result, but i've looked at it and worked at it for so long that i'm now incapable of seeing flaws and highlights. will probably revisit with fresh eyes after putting it away for a few months. but yeah, lots of the learnings.

chief among them is that clean lineart is tedious af and not for me. i won't bother again. also to change your pen nibs and battery.

i chose my OC, Red, who is my first and dearest. that was a horrible decision, i'm getting back into it and i select a subject that i want to translate perfectly ((and failed, but here he is anyway)).

on the subject of Red, for those interested:
he's a youngish Brit who forever works for minimum at a vinyl shop and whose incredible gifts are balanced by very heavy problems. brilliant intellectually, musically genius. plays any and all string, but self-identifies as a cellist. former street kid following a horrendously botched adoption; violently bipolar; tendency towards substance abuse with a long history of high-functioning herion addiction; thief, pickpocket, chronically delinquent; impatient, intolerant, fiery; and utterly incapable of seeing his own self-worth and capability. comes off as an arrogant, volatile asshole, but really he's just inclined towards brutal, pointed honesty. despite his misanthropy and difficult personality, he forms exceptionally loyal and deep attachments with the limited number of people he considers friends. derives his daily caloric intake from takeout, sweet things, and vodka. usually looks like he crawled out of the bottom of a bottle. just trying to soldier through the things that weigh him down, no interest in music as a career outside of retail because he honestly does not believe his ((phenomenal)) music would be a success. of his many struggles, getting his hair to not stick up is one of them.

never cared to know his real name, he's only ever Red.

hair was very much Axel-inspired (KH II) many years ago, Red's appearance had floated as a basic concept for a few years prior to release. it seemed a natural fit - fiery red heads. couldn't see him any other way after that. so there's my confession. also very much influenced by Layne Staley
