Bubonic Plague isn't a airborne virus however, their robes would have somewhat protected them from being bitten by fleas.

This is very well done
It's good to know that I'm not the only one that is fascinated by the plague doctors

They were doctors during the time of the Black Plague. They'd collect the bodies of those who died. They'd fill the beak of the mask with scented rags so they didn't have to smell the rotting corpses. The black robes and coverings was out of respect for the dead. Same reason you wear black at a funeral. It was also to keep them "pure" from sin and evil. Funny thing is, is that because they covered themselves like that and wore the herb filled masks they didn't catch the plague. Anyway if a town was wiped out by the plague these guys would go there and collect the bodies. Hope I helped!

Not only scented rags, but herbs and lilac. They weren't always corpse collectors, they also used these outfits in other ways during the black plague. They used this related outfit to kill rats, attend to the sick (Doctor), some of them in Italy during the plague were also responsible for travel related purposes (Gondolas, carriages, horseback, etc.) beyond that, all of what you're saying is 100% true.

Glad to meet someone who finds interest into someone who existed back then, who was actually a great cause.

I like the texture of the image. It gives the image a very grim, plague-like feel.

I'm doing a school project as well, and I was wondering if I could use your picture as a cover =o
Would you mind then if I also posted the final results on Deviantart? I would give you credit for the picture of course.

Well, misunderstood treatments? I'd say the opposite--if there is no cure, all you can do is wear black clothing, and go plague zombie-bashing.

Just finished reading "The Great Mortality" by John Kelly. An excellent book about the Black Death, I suggest it to anyone. Also, this painting is alive with superstition, and I love it.

I find the variation of colors to be very expressive--that is to say, the red face under the ivory mask is striking, even if faces aren't usually red in the real world. It left an impression on me.
