"If you could see the Earth illuminated when you were in a place as dark as night,
it would look to you more splendid than the moon."

-Galileo Galilei

Inspired by this incredible video by Nasa: Earth Illuminated (time-lapse photography).

I've always imagined the northern lights as dancing spirits.
...I want to see the Northern Lights just once in my life before I die. ;__;

I do believe the Northern lights is somehing more than Science is prepared to answer, Many stories coming from my family talk about all the paranormal events that happened during the Northern Lights, some of which inclusing seeing animals running through the sky, Elk, moose, bears, mammoth, birds, snakes and even fish.

Great! I've been a fan of Aurora/nightsky photos, but this one looks equally impressive.

It's lovely. The colors and concept are incredible. You're not alone in your spirit thoughts. Many cultures have presumed the lights to be Gods/Godesses, souls, and spirits of varying origins.
Have you seen this video [link] here on dA by ~Lovepanda29 She got some great shots, unfortunately, she had to speed up her time-lapse, but it gives you another glimpse of their beauty.
I am lucky enough to live in Northern Michigan (US), and every so often we get a beautiful show, though not quite as colorful or huge as those farther north get, but still stunning. Once I stood on the hill behind my parents house, as I looked across the field I could see an orange harvest moon, I could trace the belt of the Milky Way across the sky, and behind me were small white tendrils of light dancing and shifting on a whim. That was one of the most magical nights I have ever seen. Just keep an eye on the sky, even the small wispy shows are worth seeing. I would wish everyone the pleasure of seeing the Northern Lights (or their Southern counterpart) in person.

This is really beautiful. I can see why that video was so inspirational. You used a picture for the stars, but did you use one for the Earth (I'm guessing that's what that is)?

Jasqreate In reply to SunsetFlareX [2012-08-14 01:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And nah, I drew the Earth stuff below from scratch using several textured brushes. Only a photo was used for the stars only.

Just when I think I have seen your best... just, wow. This speaks to me on so many levels. I have such a love for the Northern Lights, though I've never seen them. Combined with my love for animals and this is just perfection. This is not only my favourite piece of yours, but one of my favourite art works I've ever seen - and I never say that lightly. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

This is beauuuuuuuuuuutiful!
It kind of reminds me of the five spirits in Zelda: Twilight Princess. You know, the ones that guard the provinces? Yeah, they are awesome.
Great art work. I'm sure you will see the lights one day ^_^ Your talent will get you anywhere and everywhere!

Oh wow, I just watched that video....

I've never seen an aurora either, but I would really like to as well.

Hahh, I love your dancing spirits you've portrayed here. That is quite a romantic thought. And I love looking at this to the music of that video too. Augh, the pink and the blue you've mixed into the green are just great; I love all the color in this.

Spirits dancing across the skies....

Beautiful.

The second I saw the word 'aurora' in the title, you got me. I like how ethereal you made the spirits look. The different colors coming together behind them look amazing, too.

I want to see the aurora with my own eyes before I die, too.

EiraSenam [2012-08-13 00:45:58 +0000 UTC]

In 2013 there will be lots of solar flare activity, so there is a great chance you will be able to see northern lights sometime next year, even in areas not that far north/south. This activity may also lead to catastrophic power outrages and can bring down the internet but lets not focus on that part, shall we? xD

Anyway, this is amazing! Love how you drew the animals

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jasqreate In reply to EiraSenam [2012-08-13 02:48:31 +0000 UTC]

I heard about that as well, but they said that for last year and the year before and well... it's hard to predict solar activity.
Haha, yeah

Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EiraSenam In reply to Jasqreate [2012-08-13 10:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. And with the way the media tend to blow things out of proportion I'm not too worried yet, heh. But I do hope I will see an aurora at some point

And you're welcome^^
