Description This is my entry for Twilight Fan Art Contest :[link]

Tile: Stephenie Meyer's World of Twilight
Medium: soft pastel, colored pencil, charcoal pencil (black and white), and graphite on strathmore drawing paper
Size: Approx. 7.5 inches x 8 inches

This is my first real attempt in pastels or colored pencil.

A little bit about this piece (could have potential spoilers to anyone who hasn't read past Twilight!!!):
When I set out to enter this contest, I wanted to do something outside of the characters (don't get me wrong, I love the characters and will probably be doing another character piece soon); so I ended up creating Stephenie Meyer herself.

This piece is supposed to incorporate all aspects of the Twilight fandom, i.e. books, movie, Stephenie, and music.

This is a relatively small piece (approx. 7.5 inches x 8 inches). So the film cells in the film strip are less than half and inch on all sides, so detail was next to impossible on that small of a scale (at least it was for my poor eyesight). However, each film cell is taken from a still from the movie. The lists of each scene used, in order are:
*Bella and Edward (not THE Meadow scene, but of them laying in a meadow area).
*Jasper and Alice
*Victoria
Then there's a 'rip' in the film cell.
*Jacob
*Emmett and Rosealie
*Carlisle with a bat
*Edward holding the apple (also Twilight's book cover)
*Edward playing the piano
Then there's a bend in the film.
*James (only you pretty much only see his chest)
*Edward at the hospital
Another bend
*Alice
*Edward leaning against the Volvo.
*Bella's truck (a.k.a. The Thing)
*Carlisle and Esme
And another bend.
*Bella and Edward.
*Bella
The last bend in the film strip.
*Edward and Bella at prom....which then fades into the red Eclipse ribbon.

The idea for the film turning into the ribbon happened when I realized the placement was perfect for it to come across a black shirt. Then I began thinking about what it would mean, and realized it was a perfect way to show that without Stephenie, we would have never had the Twilight movie (btw, I love the movie, but I will always love the book more).

The necklace holding the queen chess piece is there to symbolize that Stephenie is the most powerful player in this fandom. Plus it was the perfect way to incorporate Breaking Dawn's cover.

I wanted to use the sheet music for Bella's Lullaby for a couple of reasons: 1.) beacuse it just sums up Edward's character (Hi, I'm Edward and instead of burning you music of top 40 love songs that I think you would like, and/or describe our relationship; I'm going to compose a piece myself.---Edward's awesome ). And 2.) music itself is a huge part of the fandom and this was the only way I could think to represent that.

The border is probably the most confusing. Since I couldn't find a way to bring in New Moon's cover, I thought about what stood out in that book that I hadn't touched on yet. And the answer: Jacob. I couldn't believe I forgot about Jacob, so I decided to try to find a way to show his presence in the series. And the border is the result of that train of thought. I took into account that Jacob is not only a Quileute, but a wolf too. So I decided to do some research on Quileute tribal art. Note to anyone who is reading this: there are hardly any examples found online, or that actually exists (something about a fire that took out most of their history). So, being the weirdo that I am, I decided I would try to create my own. While doing my research, I found a tribal mask decorated as...you guessed it, a wolf! You cannot imagine tha happy dance I did for that. So I took this wolf mask, sketched it out in its 3-D form, then flattened it to 2-D. After a little more digging, I found some 2-D tribal art on a Quileute National site (I don't remember the actual site, sorry!). I compared, my 2-D version of the tribal mask to the new 2-D tribal art I found and re-created the wolf mask into what you see as it's border. I am overall very pleased witht he outcome. I love the contrast between the outdoorsy (is that a word?), wood carved border and the elegant sheet music (so screams Jacob and Edward to me).

Whew. Okay, enough of that. Hope you enjoy!

I agree with SheldonSands, this is one of the most creaties entries I've seen! I'm drawing one right now and I think this one is very original! The film fading into the ribbon and everything, is spectular. I wish you luck with the contest!

Thank you. I hope the border wasn't too weird, but I really wanted a way to incorporate Jake since he's so central to the story.

And it's awesome meeting another Original Twilighter like myself.

actually I think the border fits it nicely. It kind of brings it out even more, if I say so myself

lol we thought Twilight was cool before it really was cool XD

That's because we were so cool, that we noticed how cool it was...granted I never imagined this level of coolness and I still don't know what to think of it's new found popularity.

lol I dunno if I really liked the movie compared to the book though.. some of the actors could have been picked better, in my opinion but that's just me, what about you?

jennieannie In reply to TsukikotheServal [2009-05-06 04:47:31 +0000 UTC]

Sorry it's taken so long to reply! Semester's been horrible.

As for the movie...well I like the movie, as a MOVIE. I knew I would have problems with it, just as I do with the Harry Potter movies. As a matter of fact, thanks to my history with Potter, I knew separating the movie and the book was the best bet. It's an adaptaion, not an exact replica.

As for the actors...I'm overall pleased. I orignally wanted Emily Browning for Bella and Charlie Hunnam for Carlisle, but I think the actors did a really good job in the end. Robert Pattinson, lol, I remember when it was such a big deal that they got him and while everyone else was bemoaning the fact he was now Edward Cullen...I was jumping up and down in absolute joy. Being a huge HP nerd, a friend and I remembered him from Goblet of Fire and he was always our first choice. I thought, 'wow, there is no way I'll ever get Rob as my Edward, but I wish it so!' So yeah, I was pretty happy.

Who was it that you disliked the most? (and you can say Rob if you want, I won't mind)

TsukikotheServal In reply to jennieannie [2009-05-06 04:50:24 +0000 UTC]

Actually Bella's the one I had the problem with. She stuttered too much, but I was like meh. I still think they could have done better on the special effects though but oh well, that's why artists aren't movie directors, lol we're too perfectionist-like

I do not have the warmest feelings towards the whole Twilight series, but I have to admit that this is by far the most creative work of Twilight fanart I've seen on dA. I love the use of symbols and the fact that you didn't decide to draw another ordinary Stewart/Pattinson portrait for the contest, because I think this really stands out from the rest of the entries. Good luck with the contest. I shall root for you.

jennieannie In reply to naturalshocks [2009-03-22 10:55:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

I have to say, that while I love Rob/Kristen drawings (obviously, since I've been known to draw them), I am a fan of the series more than a fan of the movie. I think that's what influenced my drawing for the contest. I didn't want to just promote the movie again (no matter how much I love it), when I find the books to be a thousand times better. See, I'm an old fan of the books, a Twilight Original. When I became hooked on Twilight, there was one fansite, no movie, only two books (one of which had just come out), and incredibly easy to meet the author. Nobody, knew of the series.

I was trying to draw something original that reminded people of how good the books were (in my opinion) and that the fandom doesn't revolve around the movie and it's two stars (no matter how much we love them).

You cannont even imagine how much your comment has meant to me!

Oh, I love your approach. I sort of have a similar thing with the Harry Potter series. I became an instant fan from the moment I finished the first book (haha, that was ages ago, I feel so old ) and even though many people had heard of the books, there was none of that Daniel Radcliffe business yet . And then, about 2 years later the movie came out and everyone was suddenly running around with round glasses and pointy hats. I'm not very fond of the Potter movies, they're watchable, but they lack the original magic of the books.

jennieannie In reply to naturalshocks [2009-03-28 06:42:31 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, I didn't get into Potter until the first movie. I went to a Christian school where it was banned, and let me tell you, that almost made me read it but I wasn't much of a reader when it first came out. It's what got me into reading in the first place. Have you done any Potter art? I don't think I've seen it if you have...oh, and you can't be much older than me! I feel absolutely ridiculous with all the teeny boppers at the Twilight events. Lol, I see 13/14 year olds and I think, 'Holy Hell, I'm a decade older than this crowd.'

naturalshocks In reply to jennieannie [2009-03-28 18:18:56 +0000 UTC]

No, actually, I haven't. And yet I've collected some Potter movie stills and stuff that I'd really like to draw some day. I just haven't got around to it. I think I have to wait until the new movie comes out, I'll probably get inspired and Potter-crazy then and finally manage to draw Alan Rickman as Snape or something.

Ooh, Snape art! I love Snape artwork. I bet that will be awesome.

Even though they changed so much from the book, I can't wait for the movie to come out. Feels like it's been years...oh wait, thanks to WB it has been.
