Description WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION, The Original Blue Beetle. Pencil, Digital color.

In the YOUNG JUSTICE Season Two episode entitled, "Intervention," it is revealed to Jaime Reyes the true origins of the Blue Beetle scarab, and its presence on Earth. Via flashback, we see that Robin and Batgirl hacked the computer files of the late Ted Kord to learn that the scarab had been discovered by archaeologist Dan Garret on a dig in Bialya in the late 1930s. Believing the scarab to be an ancient mystical artifact, Garret used it to become the original Blue Beetle.

This pose was actually used as a model for the still image in the episode flashback, except for minor alterations. The chain-mail was always presented as an option, but it's perfectly understandable that such tedious detail would be omitted. I included it here because I was curious how it might look, and because it was a challenge to render. These colors are my own selections, and do not reflect what appears in the actual episode. And, as always, the art style is that established by Mr. Phil Bourassa.
The background was borrowed from online resources, and I made my choice according to what I felt would best approximate the period.

I love how the scarab changed to complement each Beetle. It changed hands, but each was unique and contributed their own part. Super design!

That's brilliant. The Blue Beetle graphic novels are really good too (the ones that came out around 07 or there abouts, the current run is nowhere near as good). Ted was always my favourite Beetle, I was bummed out when he died, especially since he and Booster were so good as a duo (I always thought of them as the Lenny and Carl of the DCU).Β

I can't tell you how much I love this picture.Β  I grew up with the Ted Kord Beetle (his first Post-Crisis series was a favorite), but I've always been fascinated by the Golden Age Beetle.Β  There's just something about his look that speaks to me.Β  It's so simple, but it just works.Β  You really nailed the blend of classic with the modern Beetle.Β  Great job!Β Β Β

Great piece. It's a shame the show didn't last as long as it did. I really enjoyed it, mostly because of the production art.

Me and my brother in law just recently bought season 1 pt 2 and season 2 pt 1. We hope to add to the funds fueling YJ so they can see it has a good enough fanbase to come back!
Anyone else reading this, buy all the toys and dvds of YJ you can find! If you fuel enough money into it they'll see it's worth bringing back!!

The show may no longer be in production or on the air, but the art continues to exist, as does the fandom.
