Description This is for 's Contest: The Major Arcana [link]

I've been working with tarot for well over ten years, and have been doing professional readings for a little over two of those years with my Celtic dragons deck. So, while I can not say I am any expert on the cards or their origins, I can say I know them pretty well, having worked with them on a monthly to daily basis over the years.

That being said, I tend to tell people who are new to getting a reading via the tarot that there are no 'good' or 'bad' cards in the deck, only 'happy cards' and 'not-so-happy cards'

Except for The Tower.

Even in the most liberal of interpretations, the tower is a card of upheaval, of changes unpleasant as one comes to terms with a break in the illusion of their perceptions- essentially those perceptions being torn-down. In more dire interpretations, the card is seen as an indicator of complete destruction, devastation and loss. The actual quick ref words from my deck's how-to-book are, 'you witness or experience a shocking event that leaves you changed. Potential catastrophe is near; be prepared. Your life is complicated by discord in a relationship or the family. Unforeseen setbacks bring despondency and a period of frustration. Your dreams may disintegrate into ashes.' - got to love that last line.

Anyways, not a happy card.

So why chose to depict the tower for the contest? Well, for almost as long as I've been working with tarot, I've also been dreaming of making a deck based on my novel-world. And so, I have done so, creating a Red Tower card- the only card that would be in my world's deck that would contain the color of their most wicked deity- RED. It also blends the 'modern' and fantasy images that are present in the world, and few other lovely symbolic tidbits that future fans will get to drool over.

It's a scene that depicts an overpoweringly ominous and very obvious presence dominating the landscape- and yet the figure in the foreground shies away, not willing to really look at it. See it. This is the nature of evil, and the nature of what the tower warns against. BEWARE: for the boogie man will come, and it will be a massive rippling in the water of your life. Ignoring it is a fool's errand.

This card drives me insane. Very nice work on the picture though, I like the flame motif on the tower and the black sky behind it. The woman's figure was also very well rendered.

thanx. my orginal intention had been to put good-old-sha'nell up front, but like the creepiness of a more generic 'devistaed soul'
