Absolutely. This may sound odd, but I feel so proud of you for the incredible progress you've made in your art in the past year. I feel like a mother who is watching her child become achieve their dreams. xD

Aww, thank you so much. Honestly? These pictures of the merman is what really made it sink in that I'm developing and continuing on. I sometimes have a bit of fear about my art because I don't often draw more detailed pieces and often choose to just do sketches.
Its not perfect yet and its not up to my standards, but now I feel like I'm actually getting somewhere instead of being stuck in the same place, and I have the confidence to keep moving forward.
The picture 'Lost', I really felt like... it was such a huge improvement. I hope that when I get my skills to the level I desire(I strive to be a hyperrealist) that I will revisit some of these pictures and improve on them.

I've always found that mermen and -women are such difficult subjects to approach. The concept of an entire people living in the sea has existed basically since humans have lived near/traveled on the sea. It has been done to death. And every time I see a picture of a merman that seems new or interesting to me, I have to take my hat off to that artist (in this case, you) because it's so difficult to reinvent such a timeless creature.
I feel the same way about my art. I'm extremely fickle. I have hundreds of sketches that I like... but so few completed works. I think that it just gets to a point where there is a work that you are proud enough of that propels you forward.
It amazes me simply going through your gallery and tracking your progress. Even though, obviously you're a young, developing artist, I feel that you've begun to really hone your style and create a look that is all your own. When I get deviantwatch messages, without looking at the names, I can tell if a work is yours. I've come to expect certain things from you: unique subjects, beautiful colours, etc.
That would be amazing. Just saying. xD I would love to see that.

They really are. In my eyes, they're alien(not space alien) creatures that think /drastically/ differently than we do and are therefor very difficult to understand. The idea is to capture that essence, that essence of a strange, mostly immortal creature. The terrible thing that people do these days with mythological creatures and, in sci-fi, aliens, is that they make them too human in their psychology, which honestly defeats the purpose of them being, you know, alien and mystical and different. They're not human so they really shouldn't be acting completely identical to one.
Yeah, I understand, of course xD I always do enjoy improving.
I really feel so, too. I've come in leaps and bounds and its exciting. I try my best to make everything relatively unique, make things that are my own. Colors are actually still a place I'm nervous about. I don't feel like they're dynamic enough most of the time so that's something I'm working on. Improving my shading and using more tones and stuff.
And yeah xD I honestly can't wait to get to that point.

It's interesting because almost all mythological creatures have stereotypes or common themes associated with them. While merpeople are often more sinister -- i.e. luring sailors to their deaths -- they're still very elusive. It's like aliens. It drives me mad when people will only accept the typical humanoid form of an alien. They are not humans, so why should they even remotely look like us or act like us?

Yeah. The interpretation of merfolk that I'm using is a mixture of things I've made up myself but still fit in with the merfolk theme and make sense working alongside it, and the mythological interpretation of them.
I dislike it when sirens are confused with mermaids because from most things I've seen, sirens are more similar to harpies than anything else.
I don't mind humanoid forms at all for simplicity's sake, but to think that is the only type is peculiar.
On topic of space aliens, I really dislike it when someone is a halfbreed of a human and an alien. That doesn't make sense, anywhere, ever, because quite frankly if a cat and a dog can't make a baby then neither can a human and an alien.

I totally agree. Sirens are, in essence, just a more attractive person of harpies. I view them more as... monsters, really. Mermaids, on the other hand, have the advantage of being ambiguous. They can be their own people and not be held down by the label of being a monster. They're deeper.
Agreed. I think the idea of humanoid forms comes partly from, like you said, its simplicity, and also humans' arrogance. Let's be honest, most humans believe the human race is the centre of the universe and the only living creatures in the world. Which is rather arrogant. We just don't want to accept that there are creatures nothing like us.
Thank you! I'm all for oddities and fantasy, but at least keep it semi-reasonable. Like with Twilight, for example. It pisses me off to no end that Stephenie Meyer made Bella get pregnant. How the hell would he have working sperm if, as she said previously, her vampires have no bodily fluids. It just pisses me off. xD Another reason to hate Twilight.

Yeah exactly. But modernization has turned sirens into mermaids, which frustrates me a lot, because that's not even what they are. They're tarnishing the image of mermaids - mysterious, fickle creatures whose minds are mysterious to any mortal human - by mixing them with sirens D: Completely different.
Yeah. There was one book where uh, I think aliens were handled AMAZINGLY, and that is Winter Moon by Dean Koontz, which is the only book to date which has given me problems sleeping at night after reading xD
Honestly? I can't imagine the "vampires" in Twilight as vampires. This isn't me dissing Twilight but they honestly have more in common with like evil fairfolk or something like that. Personally? I would've liked Twilight a lot more if they had been some odd species of blood-reliant faeries rather than vampires because it would've made a lot more sense.
Twilight is an absolutely stupid series and I'm going to say I only enjoyed it(albeit as a guilty pleasure) because I stopped at New Moon.

Oh, I'll have to read it. What's it about?
God, I know. Everything in the books was entirely illogical. And nearly everything Meyer wrote fell apart once she said Edward had sperm and could impregnate women. I actually read through the whole thing. xD As they say, you can't bash what you've not read.
