Description Finally got a hold of a scanner. These were done some time ago.
I still become very flustered with painting characters from scratch in photoshop. The one on the right gave me a headache.

Do you draw with pencil? If so how the hell do you make the lines so smooth and neat?

kasai In reply to TehUberMeister [2011-06-04 01:42:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is a .5 mechanical pencil drawn on bristol/kent paper. The first lines I put down are light enough so that when I put down the darks, the light lines almost disappear.

I find working from scratch in photoshop frustrating as well...Love the shading on the left most character, but the photoshop one is real nice as well, the pose is interesting...
The middle character...is e riding some sort of hoverboard like thing?

I still look back on the photoshop one and find it to be weak. This was 2007 so I feel Ive improved since then.
Yep, he's on a hoverboard thingamajig

Just a question. When you are designing characters, are these the first sketchs that you have done on each of them, or did you do some preliminary sketchs before you finalised on these ones?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kasai In reply to IvanChristian [2007-02-15 12:13:36 +0000 UTC]

The first thing I do is a small thumbnail(to the upper left of each character) to figure out the pose(sometime I put more design into it). When I find what I want, I start on the larger one.

How long do you spend on each figure on average?

Rogue-chan [2007-02-13 18:55:37 +0000 UTC]

Awesome as always *inspired*

Though, maybe two things? They are both about the most left character. At first, her hips seem very big, or was that meant to? And the position of her leg.. It somehow doesn't seem to work for me (sorry!)
And the second one...
Her.. nipples ( ) are white?

But I love the shading in the first, I adore the pose of the second one and the third one i just... As professional as can be *wubs*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

your-fathers-belt In reply to Rogue-chan [2007-02-13 21:36:50 +0000 UTC]

actually the hips on the first arent that big at all.....women have larger hips anyway, and maybe a little more twist in her body would help support that front leg....but still not much of a prob.

as for her white nipples, i think they are a wonderful design choice for the character, especially how he stratigicaly choose certain parts to use tone and to not use tone.

so yes, some things to think about.

please send me tips on how to do so.

like what kind of pencil do you use?

kasai In reply to Lessonguy [2007-02-14 08:30:31 +0000 UTC]

The middle and left one were drawn with a .5 hb lead mechanical on bristol paper. The one on the right is all photoshop. In the next day or so, Ill post a PS character tutorial done a short time ago.

i love your stetches man!!! your characters and backgrounds just amaze me!!! i especially love the way u draw women, i love dem thighs^^where did u learn to draw women? could u link to a tut?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kasai In reply to kyubisharingan [2007-02-14 08:27:07 +0000 UTC]

Learning how to draw women just comes from studying the form from life. It's good to study how others draw it as well but the negative thing about that is you might pick up the artist mistakes. If you have an anatomy book or pictures, study the way the the body works. Simplify parts of the body to grasp a better understanding. I learned structure mainly from: Books - Glen Vilppu and George Bridgman
The rest of what I learned was in school from various life drawing instructors. Every person has there own way of structure but if you can find your own way that working, then go for it.

Your ability to portray the expressiveness of the characters, and to accurately portray action poses and the flow of the clothing, not to mention the sheer level of detail on these characters really shines through again. The use of shading and the overall effect on the paper remind me of DaVinci's studies!
