Description More of my astronomical and space travel art can be seen in my DA "Space Art" gallery:

This is a card in a series I have done that is inspired by "classic" space ships and scenarios from science fiction television and movies. I am combining the old and the new. After all the Enterprise is supposed to boldly go centuries in the future so why not have it visit a kind of planet that was unknown in the 1960's.

Here we see a so-called "super-earth", a rocky planet many times larger than the Earth yet smaller than ice giants such as Neptune. This double planet is in orbit around a G-type star in the middle of its habitable zone. It is large enough to retain primordial compounds such as methane in its atmosphere, but too warm to form them as ices. This super-earth would be a hostile place for human life with a poisonous atmosphere and toxic oceans with 100 meter waves whipped up by 500 kph winds. It has a very strong magnetic field resulting in vast auroras at is poles.

Its large moon is a habitable earth-like world just waiting for a visit by an away party.
