LG-Young — The Forever Winter

Description 5.25 x 6 inches
watercolor and gouche
Time: just under 2 hours.
Part of the "Submission a Day" project for February.

When I saw this young junco in our backyard, he was all fluffed up and still, as if to conserve energy.

I wonder if his fellow birds are able to convey to him that winter doesn't last forever, and that we'll have spring in two or three more months..

Note: I don't usually use gouche, but thought I'd give it a try on the bird, and to add a few snowflakes where the masking was uneven.

It really is!

You almost forget how strong the white of the paper can be until you choose not to paint it.

Thanks. It means a lot to me, to hear comments like this from actual professionals.

Mr. Junco is much more simplified than most of my bird renderings, almost a caricature. (I didn't do an under-drawing, just applied paint to a scrap of paper). That said, I'm fairly happy with him...

That's the other thing I meant to remark upon - it does look as though it was painted straight down, and that as well as its more simplified nature (which nevertheless captures the bird beautifully) reminds me very much of the more spontanaeous Hsieh-i style of Chinese painting (as opposed to the meticulous Kung Pi style), and Japanese Sumi-e painting.

Ah, gongbi and xyeyi. (I've often wondered at the several transliterations of Chinese.) As to sumi-e, I can only dream of such elegant simplicity...

Hehe, transliterations of Thai can be just as perplexing. But it often is with many eastern languages...

Nice! And apt title! This year we've had snow non stop since October. Poor birds. It's warmer for now and all the birds are singing!

L -
This is really wonderful!
As you know, I feel completely unqualified to critique paintings, but I know what I like. I like this very much! So when you see the "print request" you'll know it was from me!
Hope you are doing well!

Richard

Aw, thanks so much Richard. (I've no idea how to do the print thingy, but will look into it.)

Lovely, LG - and so quick too! There is a certain freshness to this little guy that I am sure comes down to the relatively short time it took for him to come out on the paper. Nice masking too

"Masking"... An ancient word of Mordor, which I will not utter here...

But seriously, thanks.

You have painted him beautifully. The soft colours and lines make it seem almost dreamlike. I can't wait for the winter...I always say that during summer
