Description Here's a Conan piece I did recently just for the hell of it really. He's the one character I'd love to draw in comics that I haven't already and every now and again I just get an urge to give it another go. This one's a kind of Buscema/Windsor-Smith fusion. Enjoy!

Best,

L.

I'm not part of this scene (l used to play Jackson and Livingstone Fighting Fantasy gamebooks though?), but l think this artwork is exquisite and l want to attain to this level of competence. Truly.

Similar yet totally different rendering of Conan.  At a glance I know its Conan but closer study I see so much difference then other well know renderings

Thanks! I wanted to kind of capture two of my favourite Conan artists in one style - Barry Windsor-Smith and John Buscema.

Robert Howard could do more in a short story than a lot of fantasy writers can do in huge doorstopper volumes. I salute you.

Nice piece! You got everything right except for his hair color.
Conan's hair is jet black.

Other than that, cool piece!

I've always wanted to see you work on this character. This sort of illo proves why. Ever thought of adapting one of the public domain Howard stories yourself?

Best Conan piece I've come across so far. Very well done. Love the way you did his face. You have his glare down pat. I was always curious as to how it looked.

You know the artist is kick ass when all the colorist is really able to do is add flats to a picture. You're detail is so well rendered there is really no way to make this better with colors. I think you're stuff reminds me of John Buscema in that way. Such beautiful inking doesn't need anything to making it stand out. Bravo!

Thanks man. I colored this myself actually, which is why it's simple - to let the line-work do it's job. You look at the classic work of Barry Windsor-Smith, work like Something Ik Waes, and The Ram & the Peacock, and you can see that the colours aren't fussy and over-rendered, they let the linework sing - it's a marriage of two mediums and neither should dominate.

Very best,

Liam.

Awesome style and colouring.
Though I would add some contrast and perhaps the face is a bit overshadowed.
Otherwise, really good.

LiamRSharp In reply to PressTheEject [2010-05-09 13:09:27 +0000 UTC]

I tend to like the coloring less fussy as it can conflict with my old-school hatching. It's why, I think, my Gears of War comic has worked really nicely - Jonny Rench, the Wildstorm colorist, kept it low on contrast and really simple with regard to pallets. But ultimately it's down to taste!

Very best, and thanks!

Liam.

As Marcus says: " Suhweet!" It's sweet too cause I saw a GOW grahpic Novel at my chapters book store, but I'm unable to buy it due to the laguage. > lol. But it's awsome work my friend. Can you give me some tips on drawign Gears? I have a hard time drawing armor so sometimes it can be difficult. Thanks so much,
Jordan

LiamRSharp In reply to Akidwholovesart [2010-04-06 09:56:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, the armor is nuts to draw! So detailed! Drives you mad! LOL! You just have to concentrate and try to figure out the details and how it all fits together, there's no easy way...
So you could get the book for the brutal gore and action, but not the language? That sounds crazy! Sorry you weren't able to pick it up. I'm very proud of it.

Take care, and very best,

Liam.

Akidwholovesart In reply to LiamRSharp [2010-04-06 12:39:43 +0000 UTC]

I'll talk to my folks about it, and they MIGHT let me pick it up, but we used to have Gears of War 1 and 2, and they know ALL about the language lol. It's sweet art though, and you pull it off very well. I drew The Cole Train in school once from a reference photo, but it was in a cartoon style, so I gave him a smiley skull on his chest lol. It actually looked good though, and people knew who it was, so that was good. I also drew Marcus from GOW1, I had a poster a while ago, it's the same as your avatar thing, but he was walking. It didnt look 100% like him, but you knew who it was. BTW, I flipped through the book, and it didn't seem THAT gory to me lol Just kidding, it was sweet to see Marcus chainsawing some Locust scum!
"Ahhhh I got some on me, now I got the cooties!"-Marcus Fenix
Anyway, take care Liam, and Ill try to get the book. Hey, hows this? Once I get it, I'll draw a few panels from it. I know youre busy and all, but maybe you could gimme some pointers on it? I'd appreciate it very much, 'cause I'd like to be a comic artist or animator. Thanks for your time,
Jordan

It's insane. I'm a huge fan of the Arnie version - he just looks like Buscema drew him (minus a fat broken nose) and the tone is so moody and ambient, it doesn't insult the viewer. I often say it's like a Spaghetti Western with swords, and that's no bad thing!

Take care you!

Not a fan of Arnie's 'acting' - but It is visually brilliant, and the soundtrack is also great. Like you say, it is exactly like Buscema drew him. Although If i were to draw conan, i'd probably go for a more 'natural' brawlers physique I think. Dying to have a go actually!

LiamRSharp In reply to WavingMonsterStudios [2010-03-26 09:22:40 +0000 UTC]

I just love those big thick accents in that movie. It stands out more when you hear the American ones. Arnie doesn't really have to act in it, just brood - and he does that OK. Love the soundtrack too. THe new guy is WAAAAY too puny though...
Somebody mentioned Zavier Bardem - I think it was Chris Weston - and he's actually 100% right, that guy REALLY looks like Conan. If he spent six months in the gym THEN I'd be happy...

Best,

L x

Yeah, I doubt Bardem would do a movie like that though - and yeah he'd be good cos of the shnoz!
I loved Grace Jones in one of those movies - she is so extraordinary looking.

Guess what, facebook have disabled my account!!! I can't figure out why and can't get in. I hope nobody has hacked it! I think its cos i had a nudy lady as my profile that they've done it - its the only thing i can think of..

Have made a new profile in the meantime - have a feeling i'm not going to get hte old ones back. all very Big Brother and boring!

As you said, Liam, perfect fusion between Buscema and Smith. But, i think there are some more victorian exotic touch in your art, your touch is more nervious than Smith, less romantique in the pause but more melancolique in dark touchs. Your colors reveal different sense of cinetique with the art of Buscema, so your Conan is more natural. Plus, i think your conan reveal an new savage point of view, more realistic and maybe to more dynamic. The latin influence transforms the victorian influence of your painting and i think this conan is inhabitual. In conclusion, this barbarian could have another name instead of Conan. Conan is became an comics archetype before to be an movie caracter. That's why this conan reveal an singular look between the original conan from Howard. Howard would be so happy to discover this versions of his Barbarian, cause his barbarian has this incredible power to correspond with all the artists visions. Conan is intemporal.
Perfect painting, Liam, and thank you to reveal one more time the american genius: play with all the cultures to create your own point of view on some classical archetyps...

Hey Liam, i would be very curious to see your vision of Elric, Imaro and some another heros from the sword and sorcery...

And maybe to another caracters from Howard to (King Kull, Bran Mak, Morn, etc...)

LiamRSharp In reply to Kamulos-the-king [2010-02-28 14:12:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for this breakdown. Much appreciated. It may be the fact that I'm English, so mid Atlantic, that brings the marriage between latin and european influences and the original American pulp. I honestly, and inexplicably, feel I was born to do Conan. It sits with me very solidly.

Take care and very best,

Liam.
