I've heard onyx is easy to shatter while setting, how did you set the stone? Did you set the stone before or after sending the knife to heat treat? If before how did the stone stand up to the process, and if after how did you manage to work with the metal in such a delicate process once it was hardened?

Setting stones is the last step. Holes for setting the stones are drilled right into the steel with a lip about .030 inch deep, drop in 2 ton epoxy and drop the stone into the recess. The epoxy I use has a 200 degree melting point so if I have to I can just heat it up and pop out the stone.

Thank you. I'm in a stone-setting class and I was warned to be very careful with onyx and green stones (emeralds etc) because they tend to shatter. Unfortunately we are not allowed to use epoxy. Otherwise this was very helpful!
