Description A few weeks back I finished another SUICIDE SQUAD cover commission. I finally got around to cleaning up the 600dpi scan of the cover and I uploaded it to my website. I figured I'd post it in my DA gallery as well. This cover features the original SUICIDE SQUAD members (from DC Comics original Brave & the Bold series) in Paris, squaring off against the prehistoric terror, GOROSAURUS (from the film DESTROY ALL MONSTERS)!! The Arc De Triomphe has been torn in half already, and our are just arriving on the scene. The Squad is wearing Bell Rocket Belts-- nifty 1960s era tech that really worked and still exists! You can see one of the Bell Rocket Belts on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center branch of the SMITHSONIAN AIR & SPACE MUSEUM, in fact.

I really enjoy drawing the Suicide Squad characters. They're always fun, and since they are always fighting giant monsters near famous landmarks and monuments, it's always a challenge to figure out an interesting layout that tells a clear & exciting story, while maintaining a good sense of scale.

Sure wish comics were still only 10 cents!!

Hope you enjoy!

By the way...Bill Cox is the client who commissioned this piece. I hid Bill's first name in this drawing someplace. See if you can find it!

Something you might like to know. Gorosaurus wasn't ment to be the monster attacking paris, the say during the news flash that Baragon was attacking Paris. Thought you'd like to know.

LostonWallace In reply to PilotAaronIzzard [2011-10-17 10:57:27 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. Wonder why they changed their mind on that in the film and had Gorosaurus bursting through the ground in from of the Arc? Makes you wonder if the dubbing was wrong, or they needed to create another scene with Gorosaurus?

ryuuseipro In reply to LostonWallace [2012-08-06 18:04:43 +0000 UTC]

The reason was because Baragon was supposed to burrow through Paris, but the Baragon suit was not yet fully repaired (and was limited to a brief appearance), so Gorosaurus was used at the last minute.

Actually, Gorosaurus first appeared in KING KONG ESCAPES (Rankin-Bass/Toho; 1967), in a scene that emulated the Kong Vs. T-Rex sequence of the 1933 film, but he appeared in DAM the next year.

Hope this helps!

LostonWallace In reply to ryuuseipro [2011-10-12 20:39:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I never said it was his first appearance in film. Heh. I love King Kong Escapes though. It's hard not to like movies with guys in rubber monster suits. There's just something about the charm of that, and all the scaled miniature buildings and vehicles getting crushed that makes me happy.

ryuuseipro In reply to LostonWallace [2011-10-13 03:58:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, granted.

The Japanese, as well as the British and others, have always had imagination, especially when it came to practical SPFX. In the case of Japan's "tokusatsu" (their term for special effects), I think the best came from Toho, Tsuburaya, and even Daiei. In the SPFX world, Toei is known mostly for their TV superhero work, but the work they produce is not half-bad, even their movie stuff!

Even Eiji Tsuburaya, and the FX artists that follow his example, have compared SPFX to their childhood dreams and imagination. And that's one of the greatest charms of special effects, indeed.
