Description This is the first Suicide Squad Cover Commission I did in the Fall of 2011. I posted this on DA before, but the file picture never seemed to load correctly. This is me trying it again!

I did this for Bill Cox, an art collector and a fan of the original SUICIDE SQUAD from THE BRAVE & THE BOLD comics of the early 1960s. The SUICIDE SQUAD were a paramilitary group who fought giant monsters, dinosaurs and aliens. This is a cover commission not based on any previous published SUICIDE SQUAD cover. I made up the layout myself, and reinterpreted the characters into the animated style as the client wanted. Bill asked for the Squad to be fighting a giant snake in Paris! I had the idea to have the snake wrapped around the Eiffel Tower, and I chose to draw it from an birdseye POV. It took me about a day to figure out the perspective of the tower on a scrap piece of paper, and another day to figure out the foreshortening on the snake's scales! Heh. I originally considered having the Squad parachuting in, but parachutes take up too much layout real estate, so I opted to have them flying in on the Hiller Flying Platforms, which REALLY existed in the 1950s! They were to be used in the U.S. Army, Marines and Navy during the Cold War, but they cost too much, and the pilots were sitting ducks to gunfire on the ground. They were also too hard to stear, and their central fan was very, very loud, making them a liability as a recon weapon. The program was eventually scrapped. They do appear in the opening of the JONNY QUEST animated tv show though, and I thought they added a nice sci-fi/historical touch, since the Suicide Squad characters existed in the same era. Hope you like this, and I appreciate your faves!

These cover commissions you did of the suicide squad are some of my favorite pieces of yours. The perspective on this one especially is perfectly done, and overall the quality is professional!

It took me a few years to learn how. The best advice I can give you is not to fear your inking tools. I inked this with a brush and Super Black India Ink. When I first started inking with a brush, I wasn't very good at it, but I stayed with it. The first 100 things I inked, weren't much to write home about, but I kept getting better and better each time I inked something. Now I have turned uncertainty and lack of inking ability into confidence and skill. It took time, but it's worth the time if you walk away with skill. Right?

Excellent layout and perspective.
The info on the Hiller Flying Platforms is very cool.
Of course I had to Google it. Found some videos of it in action on you

It really is. Those Hiller Platforms were a radical idea. Too bad they couldn't really find a way to use the technology back then.
