Description Here are the pencils for the third SUICIDE SQUAD cover I was commissioned to do. This piece features the original Suicide Squad battling Ray Harryhausen's famous "Rhedosaurus", known better as "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS"! "The Beast" destroys a lighthouse (he also did this in the film), as the Squad members began to rally. Karin sports a classic Cold War era Bazooka, and Rick Flag Jr is wearing an M2 Flamethrower. I depict Jesse Bright riding towards "the Beast" in a Hiller Flying Platform, and Dr. Hugh Evans sails thru the air with a nifty Bell Rocket Belt. These two devices pay homage to the previous two SUICIDE SQUAD commissions that I've done.

I never get tired of drawing these characters, so I hope Bill Cox continues to commission more pieces from me in the near-future. It would be great to draw the Squad against Godzilla or Fin Fang Foom someday! I'm a big fan of the Atlas age of Marvel, and I know Bill is too, so anything could happen!

Hope you guys enjoy!

Loston

This is actually a pretty well done comic cover! Are you going to color it too? Or did you only do the lineart?

I'm only doing the b&w. My friend Steve Downer has colored the other two SUICIDE SQUAD images in my gallery, so I hope he'll color this one as well. Steve really seems to understand how to handle the coloring on these classic, yet complex images.

The detail in your work and reference research marks you as the professional you are. Love the details on the Beast.

LostonWallace In reply to CWilliamRussette [2012-07-04 23:37:14 +0000 UTC]

The details are important--even the little ones. My goals as an artist is to provide art with clarity that entertains viewers. I want to draw viewers into the story being told, and offer them a moment to escape reality and journey for a second into the realm of the fantastic. I subscribe to the notion that my art should have a desired amount of credibility, but it should always be FUN. I do my best to achieve these goals. I aim high, and strive to do better work every time I draw something new--be it a comic page, illustration or even a sketch. At the end of the day though, I have a need to entertain myself when I draw. When I draw commissions, I always give the clients my very best work. It's my pleasure to do that, and my good fortune to have garnered the skills to make people happy. I like it when people are happy.

Loston outdid himself again. This is one of my favorite commissions -- ever!

And I cant beging to tell you how many folks have said that they would love to see the classic Squad in a new series - drawn by Loston, perhaps?

Anyone out there from DC listening, hello?

LostonWallace In reply to AtlasFan [2012-07-04 23:26:00 +0000 UTC]

Wish there was a book about the classic Squad. I know I'd buy it if it were well written and drawn, and I'd naturally love to draw it!

nah, this concept sadly doesn't fit into the current New-52 approach. e_e *sighs unhappily*

Would fit really well in a pulp-esque world like First Wave or something.

Company plans, concepts and attitudes change from time to time. Maybe someday in the future, DC will rethink its current strategies. Markets change, and so do personnel, so who knows what tomorrow might bring.
