From in the Time of Dragons

Fire burned all around her. Her heart was still pounding though the danger had passed. They had all passes upon meeting her blood stained blade. She could feel the heat… and though it should have hurt, it was comfortable to her… somehow she felt that maybe she deserved to burn for what she had done. Knowing no one was still alive to see she removed her mask and hood, and took a deep breath. The air was filled with the iron sent of blood and the charcoal and smoke of burned buildings. Her hair fell out around her and tossed in the breeze created by the flames. She tried again.

She looked into her heart and tried to find the guilt she always saw so plainly on Ryu’s face. She remembered telling him that the difference between good people and bad people was that good people knew when they had done something that was wrong… and felt shame for it. Good people would choose to do the thing that causes the least sorrow because they cared. She remembered telling him that he was good because he cared about things and felt sorrow for the lives he took. She believed what she had said, but there was something wrong.

There was something wrong with her. She couldn’t find the guilt that she knew she should be feeling now. There was exhilaration from the fight and a feeling of power. It was intoxicating, and she found she was already craving the thrill of fighting for her life again. Kill or be killed… The most exciting way to live. And now countless people were dead all around her… and she felt no remorse… only pride at having been the best warrior among them. These were the thoughts and feelings of a monster… how could she feel good about any of this?

Simply thinking about this made her sick. She was disgusted by herself. Was she becoming the very thing she wished to rid the world of? That is when she found it… not quite what she expected. It wasn’t guilt, it was shame. Shame for her arrogance and her lack of caring… shame at her lie… she pretended to care… but did she really? She didn’t want to be a monster. A tear started to form in her eyes and she was mad at it. The tear felt like a lie, and that burned more than the fire around her. It consumed her, and she found herself weak in the knees. Why did she always have to look for thing she didn’t want to find? Guilt? Shame? It wasn’t something she wanted to feel… but now she couldn’t make it go away.

I should try not to think about it. She told herself. I’m going to go insane if I keep this up.
